Product Description

Is there anything more nostalgic at Christmas time than carolers gathering to sing from house to house?

Sold out at the Mint!Traditionally known as wassailing, the centuries-old practice of groups of people gathering to go door-to-door singing Christmas Carols is still alive and well today. This venerable practice brings out feelings of kinship and nostalgia for many people, puts smiles on the faces of young and old. It was not always viewed this way though, at times in early New England for example, there were sometimes rowdy groups of young men who would visit the wealthy neighborhoods and try to connive free food and drink, much like trick-or-treating.

Carolers gather outside the home Today, however, most caroling is associated with charity, where groups of children and adults will gather to sing Christmas Carols and solicit donations for their favorite charitable cause in keeping with the holiday spirit of giving.

Like a scene out of a Norman Rockwell painting that captures the essence of pure Americana, the artists at the Royal Canadian Mint have executed a touching winter scene of nostalgic beauty. A family gathers around an outdoor Christmas tree singing holiday carols from their music books, a light snow falling around them. The traditionally decorated Christmas tree and the formal, early 20th-century attire of the family invite us to consider the slower and more gentle charms of a bygone era, when the simple things a family did together made all the difference.

This is the second coin in the annual Holiday Traditions series, following last year's Wintertime Sleigh Ride $20 Silver Proof. The superb designers and engravers at the Royal Canadian Mint have continued last year's theme of the Christmas tree and the old-fashioned look of the design. The lights on the Christmas tree even appear to twinkle when you tilt the coin back and forth, an ingenious trick of the engraving technique through the various finishes used. This is traditional engraving and design at its finest, and will be an inspiring gift for anyone who appreciates the thoughts of traditional Christmas activities.

Children Singing Carols Nothing says "Christmas fun" like caroling, but owning a meticulously-engraved silver proof that captures the memories is a close second!

Investment Note

The Christmas Carolers $20 Pure Silver Proof has a mintage limit of only 10,000, which is an extremely low mintage for a Canadian $20 silver proof. This is also the same mintage limit as the 2002 Queen Mother Silver Dollar, which now trades for over $400 in the aftermarket. We believe that this will be a very scarce issue once it is sold out at the mint.

Technology Note
The Royal Canadian Mint refines the purest silver in the world. The RCM is also the only mint in the world to issue commemorative coins in a .9999 fineness. This one ounce silver coin is 99.99% pure!
