Product Description

An unique finish, a new, even lower mintage limit, and unique animal dollar (found only here!) make for an incomparable set!

Specimen Set CoinsSold out at the Mint! The Specimen Set from the Royal Canadian Mint is indeed unique, unlike any other coin set found anywhere else in the world. Each coin features the mint's distinctive "specimen" finish, a three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (raised area or relief) includes both brilliant and frosted finishes, while the fields (background) are subtly striated, providing a matte appearance. These combine to give the Specimen Set coins their special aesthetic appeal and flair.

The 2010 Specimen Set includes a specimen-finish example of each and every one of the circulation coins of Canada, each of which features a design of national importance, including:

    One Cent Maple Leaf Penny
    Five Cent Beaver Nickel
    Ten Cent Bluenose Schooner Dime
    Twenty-Five Cent Caribou Quarter
Fifty Cent Coat of Arms Half Dollar
One Dollar Common Northern Harrier Hawk "Loonie"
Two Dollar Bimetallic Polar Bear "Toonie"

However, instead of a standard common loon dollar, the 2010 Specimen Set includes a dollar found only in this set (and not released into circulation). This one-year-only design features a splendid Northern Harrier Hawk surveying its domain and searching for prey from a cattail or bulrush.

New this year - an even lower mintage limit - only 35,000!

The Northern Harrier Hawk
The Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) is a handsome hawk, found throughout the northern parts of the northern hemisphere in Canada and the northernmost USA, and in northern Eurasia. It is known by several different names, including the hen harrier and the marsh hawk. It migrates to more southerly areas in winter, to the southernmost USA, Mexico, and Central America. It is the only harrier hawk indigenous to Canada.

A splendid Northern Harrier Hawk surveying its domain and searching for prey from a fence post. The Northern Harrier measures 18 to 22 inches (45-55 cm) in length, with a wingspan of between 40 and 48 inches (100-122 cm). It resembles other harriers in having distinct male and female plumages. The sexes also differ in weight, with males weighing an average of 12 to 13 ounces (350 g) and females an average of 19 ounces (530 g).

This medium-sized raptor (or bird of prey) breeds on moorland, bogs and farmland. The nest is on the ground. Four to six whitish eggs are laid. In winter, the Northern Harrier is a bird of open country, and will then roost communally, often with other, similarly sized raptors. This is a typical harrier, with long wings held in a shallow V in its low, contour-hugging, flight. Northern Harriers hunt small mammals and birds, surprising them as they drift low over fields and moors. This harrier tend to be a very vocal bird while it glides over its hunting ground.
