The Red Maple is well known throughout eastern North America for its brilliant scarlet fall foliage.Resplendent Natural Beauty
Canada is renowned for its wildlife and natural resources. Its natural beauty echoes across the land, ever-changing to reflect the varied climate and geography that shape the continent from coast to coast to coast. This beauty is further enhanced by the changing seasons. As spring gives birth to summer and autumn surrenders to the dormancy of winter, the maple changes and adapts in perfect rhythm.

In autumn, the changing colors of its leaves beckon admirers onto hiking paths to relish the breathtaking scene of Nature's changing glory. One of the best vantage points is on a shoreline to watch colors dance on the water. The fall design - one of four seasonal motifs, each with a mintage of only 1,000 -  features this delicate dance: two red maple leaves (colored crimson by the Mint's proprietary colorization technology) lie on the banks of a brook, with river stones or pebbles.

The Red Maple
The Red Maple (Acer rubrum, also known as Swamp or Soft Maple) is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America. It ranges from the Lake of the Woods on the border between Ontario and Minnesota, east to Newfoundland, south to near Miami, Florida, and southwest to eastern Texas. Many of its features, especially its leaves, are quite variable in form. At maturity the red maple often attains a height of around 80 feet (25 meters). It is aptly named as its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all red to varying degrees. Among these features, however, it is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn.

Over most of its range, the red maple is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions, perhaps more so than any other tree in eastern North America. It can be found growing in swamps, on poor dry soils, and most anywhere in between. Elevation is also not a limiting factor in its range, as it grows well from sea level to about 3,000 feet (900 meters). Due to its attractive fall foliage and pleasing form, the red maple is often used as a shade tree for landscapes. It is farmed commercially on a small scale for maple syrup production as well as for its medium to high quality lumber. It is also the State Tree of Rhode Island.

This 14-karat gold proof features an artistically rendered portrait of maple leaves, national symbol of Canada. In addition to this affordable gold proof, Canada has also issued specimen finish Gold Maple Leaf (GML) coins, as well as the long-running series of Silver Maple Leaf (SML) coins, the flagship coins of the Royal Canadian Mint.

There are four coins in this series, one for each of the seasons.

Investment Note
The mintage limit for this coin is only 1,000, making it truly rare and meaning that only that total number of people worldwide can ever own it. This is a tiny mintage for such a relatively inexpensive coin - most larger, more expensive gold proofs have a higher mintage as well. In that it portrays maples leaves, the dominant symbol of Canada (as found on the Canadian national flag), we recommend securing your position immediately.
