What could be more beautiful than a single, perfect maple leaf? Hold it in your hand and gaze at this marvel of nature - so deceptively simple, yet so compelling. Along with the beaver and the Mountie, the maple leaf is considered one of the three iconic emblems of Canada - so definitive, in fact, that in 1965 the national flag was changed to the red and white maple leaf flag we know today.

SingleGreenMapleLeaf.jpg Now you can capture this very same beauty on one of the best-known and most widely collected precious metal coins in the world, the Silver Maple Leaf. First minted in 1988, Canada's own SML is the purest silver coin ever struck, and has the highest face value, a full five dollars, as well!

The Canada Silver Maple Leaf is the most collected of all Canadian coins! For type collectors, please note that the following portraits of Queen Elizabeth II have appeared on Silver Maple Leaf coins:

1988-1989  2nd effigy by Arnold Machin
  1990-2003  3rd effigy by Dora de Pédery-Hunt
2004-pres.  4th effigy by Susanna Blunt

There has been an ongoing scarcity of Silver Maples since 2008, and the same if not worse is expected for 2011. One only need look at the substantial rise in silver prices over this period to understand how much more valuable a commodity silver is being considered. This shortage is largely the result of demand greatly outstripping supply, as silver prices continue to climb while other forms of personal wealth (real estate, equities (i.e., stocks and bonds), interest-bearing investments, and the value of the U.S. dollar) continue to decline. This shortage has been exacerbated by the U.S. Mint and other foreign mints turning off the supply of silver coins, as they refuse to sell into volatile markets. Our suggestion - get these while you can!

The Specimen Finish
This coin features the uniquely-Canadian "specimen" finish, a three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (raised area or relief) includes both brilliant and mirrored surfaces, while the fields (background) are subtly striated, resulting in a contrasting, matte appearance. No other mint in the world employs the specimen finish.
