Sold out at the Mint! What could be more beautiful than a single, perfect maple leaf? Hold it in your hand and gaze at this marvel of nature - so deceptively simple, yet so compelling. Along with the beaver and the Mountie, the maple leaf is considered one of the three iconic emblems of Canada - so definitive, in fact, that in 1965 the national flag was changed to the red and white maple leaf flag we know today.

A single, golden maple leaf! Now you can capture this very same beauty on one of the best-known and most widely collected precious metal coins in the world, the Gold Maple Leaf. First minted in 1979, the standard edition GML is as pure as any other gold coin struck anywhere else in the world, and purer than most, we might add.

This, however, is not a standard 1 Ounce Gold Maple Leaf! This Maple Leaf is 99.999% pure, making it and its other 5 9s Canadian relatives the purest gold coins on the planet! The Royal Canadian Mint is the only Mint in the world to refine and mint coins of 5 9s or 99.999% purity - its famed .99999 fine coins!

There are also other differences between this 5 9s GML and a standard GML. The obverse design features a one year only depiction of a pair of maple leaves. The face value is $200, not $50 like a standard one ounce Gold Maple Leaf. The edge features interrupted serrations. And of course it is issued by the Mint in a security card, not loose.

Please note that .99999 Fine Gold Maple Leaves have only been issued for three years: 2007, 2008 and 2009 - and the 2008 $200 GMLs are considered the scarcest of all!

For type collectors, please note that the following portraits of Queen Elizabeth II have appeared on Gold Maple Leaf coins:

1979-1989  2nd effigy by Arnold Machin
  1990-2003  3rd effigy by Dora de Pédery-Hunt
2004-pres.  4th effigy by Susanna Blunt

The Specimen Finish
This coin features the uniquely-Canadian "specimen" finish, a three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (raised area or relief) includes both brilliant and mirrored surfaces, while the fields (background) are subtly striated, resulting in a contrasting, matte appearance. No other mint in the world employs the specimen finish.
