The Design
The vignette is an engraved rendition of a photograph by one of Canada’s foremost dance photographers, David Cooper. This overhead view features six ballerinas from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s lavish production of The Sleeping Beauty – a ballet classic that brings together timeless choreography from Marius Petipa and the spellbinding music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. With their arms outstretched and intertwined, the dancers form a snowflake-like pattern as they lean forward, their right legs outstretched in front of them so that their point shoes meet at the center. Advanced "Sheer Effect" color faithfully recreates the stunning costumes worn by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s dancers and further showcases the beautiful embellishments that adorn their traditional platter tutus.

Sleeping Beauty
A beautiful ballerina performs the world famous ballet Sleeping Beauty. Eight-year-old Anna Pavlova decided to become a ballerina after seeing the original production of Sleeping Beauty, which opened at the Maryinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, Russia in 1890. Choreographed by Marius Petipa, the production was set to what many believe is Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky's finest ballet score. The story concerns wicked Carabosse, who condemns the infant Princess Aurora to prick a finger and die at the age of 16. Unable to fully undo the powerful magic spell, the Lilac Fairy vows that Aurora will instead fall into a deep sleep for 100 years. After battling Carabosse for entry to the overgrown castle, Prince Florimund finds his true love and awakens her with a kiss. The ensuing marriage is attended by many fairy tale characters.

A beautiful ballerina performs the world famous ballet Swan Lake.Art Form in Dance and Music
Ballet (from the Latin ballere, "to dance") itself is a formalized type of performance dance, which originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and which was further developed in France, England, and Russia as a concert dance form. Since its earliest inception, ballet become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It is primarily performed to the accompaniment of classical music. It has been influential as a form of dance globally and is taught in ballet schools around the world, with its own cultures and societies to inform the art. Ballet dance works (called "ballets", as celebrated in this coin set) are choreographed and performed by trained artists, include mime and acting, and are set to music (usually orchestral but occasionally vocal). It is a poised style of dance that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance styles.

Ballet is best known in the form of the Late Romantic Ballet Blanc, which preoccupies itself with the female dancer or ballerina to the exclusion of almost all else, focusing on pointe work, flowing, precise acrobatic movements, and often presenting the dancers in the conventional short white French tutu. Later developments include Expressionist Ballet and Neoclassical Ballet, and include elements of Modern Dance.
