Sold out at the Mint!More than any other pope in the modern era, Pope John Paul II was a central force in world affairs, his active participation in contrast to the reclusive papacies before him. He was the first pope to visit Canada, traveling across this nation from east to west in September 1984 and returning to speak in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, three years later. On his second visit, in July 2002, millions gathered in Toronto, Ontario, to see Pope John Paul II on World Youth Day.

Pope John Paul II consecrates the eucharistic host during one of many papal or pontifical masses he celebrated all around the world. For many in Canada and around the world, he was the hero who brought down communism in Poland - a staunch supporter of human rights who often criticized oppressive governments. When asked if he feared retribution, he answered, "I'm not afraid of them. They are afraid of me." He was right: in 1981 an assassination attempt was made on his life. Such conviction is usually borne of hardship and struggle. John Paul II lost his mother at 8, his brother at 11 and his father at 21. Along with the rest of the Polish nation, he experienced persecution under Nazi Germany and completed his seminary studies "underground." Yet, despite these difficulties, his warm and gentle grace was undeniable, and his passion and integrity are to be emulated. On April 27th, 2014, Pope John Paul II will join the cannon of Roman Catholic saints.

Saint John Paul II's Canonization
The movement for Pope John Paul II's canonization began in 2005, shortly after his death, with the traditional five year waiting period waived. On December 19, 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI. John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed a first miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle attributed to the late pope was approved on July 2, 2013 and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II will be canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII (who inaugurated the Second Vatican Council). Like Pope John XXIII, John Paul II's feast day is not celebrated on the date of his death (as is customary), but on October 22nd, the anniversary of his papal inauguration in 1978.

The Polish Pope - And One of the 20th Century's Greatest Figures!
POPE JOHN PAUL II PROFILENever before in papal history has a figure been so loved and revered as Pope John Paul II. No one has had a more profound impact on the contemporary Church and modern history.

Born Karol Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, he was baptized in the Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Wadowice, Poland. During the Nazi occupation of his homeland he entered the underground seminary and was ordained a priest. He earned his doctorate in theology in 1946, and in 1958 was appointed an auxiliary bishop. Six years later he became Archbishop of Krakow, and in 1967 was elevated to the rank of Cardinal.

In 1978 Karol Wojtyla was elected supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and took the name John Paul II, becoming the first Polish pope in history. In his inaugural ceremony in Rome, Jan Pawel II pronounced his famous words, "Be not afraid." This sentiment would be reflected in his life, teachings and activity.

POPE JOHN PAUL IIIn 1981 an assassination attempt weakened Pope John Paul II's health but strengthened his resolve to spread the gospel of love to people of all faiths throughout the world, especially to youths and children. During his papacy the pontiff visited over 125 countries on all the inhabited continents. The unwavering leadership and commitment of Jan Pawel II against the domination of his homeland by Soviet Marxism is credited with helping to drive communism from Poland in 1989.

On April 2, 2005, beset by many infirmities and after a protracted illness, the Holy Father passed into eternity. The life he led represents one of the most influential and inspirational of the twentieth century.
