Sold out at the Mint!In 2014 the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the time-honored teachings and wisdom of the noble Native American tribes by celebrating the Seven Sacred Teachings. These traditional concepts of respect and sharing form the cornerstones of a full, fulfilling and happy life. While various forms of these precepts exist among the different native peoples North America, this diversity only enriches and underscores the universality of their wisdom. Each of the Seven Teachings is represented by a totem, or sacred animal. Each coin was designed by Nathalie Bertin, a Métis artist who is inspired by the woodland style of her Algonquin heritage and ancestry. With their extremely low mintage limit of only 7,000 per animal, these will heavily demanded! The seven different one troy ounce, pure silver proofs (each highlighted in 24-karat gold plating) include:

    1)  Love - The Eagle
    2)  Respect - The Bison or Buffalo
    3)  Courage - The Grizzly Bear
    4)  Honesty - The Raven
    5)  Wisdom - The Beaver
    6)  Humility - The Wolf
    7)  Truth - The Turtle

Seven Sacred Teachings BoxHumility, Represented by The Wolf
The wolf is one the seven totemic creatures that comprise the Seven Sacred Teachings practiced by Native American peoples for living a full and happy life. Many groups reference the wolf for its lesson of humility; the recognition that each of us is a small part of a larger whole. The wolf’s devotion to its pack teaches us to put the needs and well-being of others above our own interests and desires, and that “community” is essential to our survival and success.

The gold plated section of this coin reflects humanity’s dependence upon Mother Earth, as well as the great wisdom that can be learned from observing nature. The powerful image captures the essence of community, the harmonious co-existence that can only be achieved through the humility of its individual members.

Canadian artist Nathalie Bertin has created a powerful image of a wolf and a human howling together in harmonious co-existence. In the background, a pattern of tobacco leaves reinforces the wolf’s teaching of humility. The denomination is also indicated.
