The seven stars that make up the Big Dipper are arguably the most recognized constellation in the night sky. They are visible year-round from northern latitudes, and have inspired countless legends around the globe. Many Native American legends describe the Big Dipper as a Great Bear who is hunted ceaselessly by three hunters. "A Great Bear is killing all the animals. Our people will starve. We must stop it,” the shaman said. Three great hunters set out in pursuit of the great bear. They tracked it for many moons, across the entire earth and finally up into the sky. Combining two proprietary technologies, color and the revolutionary photoluminescence, the Royal Canadian Mint ups the numismatic ante once more - the glow-in-the-dark effect is phenomenal! This is the first silver Canadian glow in the dark coin program!

This first release in the Native American Star Charts Series shows the three hunters as they prepare to slay the bear as it tries to hide in a cave in a star-filled sky. The design showcases the hunters’ impressive traditional Saulteaux dress, complete with imposing face paint, weaponry and ceremonial shield with bear claw motif.

Star Charts Glow in the Dark Silver Proof - Glowing Box!Glow in the Dark Photoluminescence Technology
This new Native American coin features a new and patented technology from the Royal Canadian Mint, a special finish selectively applied to the silver proof. The RCM leads the world with its proprietary technologies, in which the finish is actually sealed on the coin. This photoluminescent technology makes the stars in the dark! The effect can be seen through the capsule and will not wear out. Sunlight is best, but fluorescent and incandescent lights (as found in most households) can also be used to activate the special photo-luminescent substance which makes the stars of the Big Dipper glow. For best effect, expose the coin to one of these light sources for about a minute, then view in the dark to reveal the stars in the night sky.

Mesmerizing color brings the richness of Native American traditions to life. It’s easy to imagine the powerful scene that played out as brave members of the Plains Ojibwa tribe set out to hunt the Great Bear under a star-filled sky. Not all the stars are colored. Some of them shine with the perfection of 99.99% pure silver to further enhance the twinkling night sky.

As an added bonus, the full color, outer box also glows in the dark!
