Battle of Britain Outer BoxThe first coin in the WWII Battlefront Series is the Battle of Britain, highlighting Canada’s role in this deadly aerial combat and paying tribute to the heroic Canadians who helped fend off the Nazi onslaught of death from above during the Blitz. The vignette depicts a Canadian fighter pilot in a Hawker Hurricane shooting down a Dornier Do 17Z bomber over the English Channel and the Cliffs of Dover. During the Battle of Britain in World War II, the only thing standing between England and Nazi invasion was a small cadre of extremely brave fliers in their Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires. As Winston Churchill opined, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

An Original Work of Military Art
The meticulously detailed design by Canadian artist Ardell Bourgeois pays tribute to Canada’s role in the Battle of Britain during World War II with its depiction of a dogfight in the skies above Dover. At the helm of a Hawker Hurricane, a Canadian fighter pilot climbs rapidly after firing upon a German Dornier Do 17Z bomber. The enemy plane loses altitude as a trail of dark smoke billows up from one of its engines. Well below these warplanes, England’s beautiful southeastern coast, where the waters of the English Channel meet the famous White Cliffs of Dover, remains as timeless as over.
