The Legend of the Headless Brakeman
Haunted BrakemanHow's this for a railroad train themed ghost story? The legend recounts many mysterious hauntings at one of Vancouver's train yards ever-since an ill-fated night in 1928. On that night, a brakeman slipped while working in the wee hours. At that very moment a passing train ran over his neck on the rails. He lost his life - and his head - perishing alone, with the gruesome scene to be discovered in the morning. To this day, the decapitated brakeman's spirit haunts the train yard, appearing on dark nights in search of his lost head! This lenticular coin recounts the chilling tale by picturing the spectral brakeman in the glow of his lantern. When tilted, the light extinguishes, leaving behind only the eerie, shadowy presence of the headless brakeman!

The design employs spectacular lenticular technology to outstanding effect, masterfully relating the chilling tale of Vancouver’s headless brakeman. In one image, the dark train tunnel is suddenly illuminated by the bright glow of a lantern as an otherworldly figure emerges before the viewer, dressed in a railway uniform from 1928. Chillingly, the brakeman appears without a head, with two small, glowing orbs that create the illusion of spectral eyes peering out towards the viewer. When the coin is tilted to the other side, the light suddenly goes out, leaving the viewer alone in the darkness with this shadowy presence, as the ill-fated brakeman continues his eternal search for his missing head along the train tracks.

Haunted Brakeman Technology Note
This lenticular Crown-Size Color Quarter features the Royal Canadian Mint’s patented colorization technology. The RCM leads the world with its proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The intricate detail, smooth gradients, and extreme precision of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.

The Specimen Finish
This coin features the uniquely-Canadian "specimen" finish, a three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (raised area or relief) includes both frosted and mirrored surfaces, while the fields (background) are subtly striated, resulting in a contrasting, matte appearance. No other mint in the world employs the specimen finish.
