One is the hunter, the other, the hunted. This four-coin series explores the predator and prey relationship of the Arctic fox and the Arctic hare in Canada’s far North, where the harsher climate necessitates unique adaptations that have set these two species apart. The first coin focuses on the features of a prolific hunter, as seen in this life-like, close-up depiction of an Arctic fox.

An Arctic Fox in his camouflaged white fur coat, walking across the snow! The gold is pure - four 9s pure (.9999), in fact. And it's affordable, so get yours today! The Untamed Arctic Fox
A sleeping Arctic Fox is perfectly warm in his fine insulated fur!Just slightly larger than the average house cat, Vulpes lagopus - the Arctic Fox - is Canada’s smallest member of the canidae family. A silent, prolific hunter, the Arctic Fox’s diet consists largely of lemmings; it will kill dozens a day, particularly when hunting for its brood of (on average) 6 pups. The population cycle of the Arctic Fox is thus inextricably tied to the mysterious waxing and waning of the global lemming cycle, which peaks and then diminishes to near zero levels about every 4 years. The Arctic Fox will also eat a wide variety of other foods (when and where available), including eggs, squirrels, berries, birds, small marine animals, fish, and carrion.

The pelt of the Arctic Fox is unmatched for warmth, sustaining it at temperatures below -50° Celsius. Its fur is brown, gray-brown, blue-gray, or dark blue-gray in the warmer months. In the long Arctic winter, most foxes turn pure white, although some populations show lighter blue-gray through the winter phase. The fox’s thick fur covers its small rounded ears and even the pads of its feet, providing for optimal warmth.

A Stunning Wildlife Design, An Original Work of Art
The design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc features a side-profile view of an Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), depicted here in the style of a traditional wildlife portrait. Meticulous engraving recreates the fox’s features with extraordinary precision on such a small canvas, giving it a life-like quality that beautifully captures the texture of its thick, winter pelt. Standing still in the wintry landscape, the fox’s small, rounded ears are alert as it quietly steadies its gaze on its prey beyond the image field.
