It's a true thrill to wildlife lovers when they catch a glimpse of the majestic buffalo in the wild! Two centuries ago, the speed and power of a vast stampeding herd of American Bison would churn up clouds of dust that roiled high into the sky, carried for miles across the Great Plains. To the Native Americans who hunted them, they provided an entire way of life. Today, though bison are greatly reduced in number, we can still see the deeply worn paths of their traditional migratory routes across the prairies. Enormous, powerful, invested with exceptional senses of smell and hearing, today’s bison faces new threats, including habitat destruction and new diseases. These noble beasts will doubtless face these dangers as they have others through the millennia: by relying on endurance, determination, and the protective strength of the herd.

A Highly Detailed, Original Work of Art by Wildlife Artist Doug Comeau!
The endangered wood bison, the largest land mammal of North America. The intricate design by Canadian artist Doug Comeau features a wildlife portrait of a plains bison in a natural setting. The majestic land-grazing mammal is shown in three-quarter profile against the rolling foothills in the background, where the tall trees give a sense of the bison’s height in this open space. Vibrant full colorgives the wild bovine a life-like appearance, while highly detailed engraving captures the texture of its dark-brown shaggy hair and the roundness of its distinctive shoulder hump. The bison has raised its head and gazes off into the distance, allowing for a better view of the horns on its head and its facial features. The green, yellow and white hues of the grasses and wildflowers at its feet represent the diversity of plant life in its grassland habitat, while the engraved forest and hills behind it convey the rugged beauty of the North American wilderness.

The Plains Bison: A Symbol of Strength and Determination
From the time of the Ice Age until the late 1800s, the magnificent plains bison (Bison bison) reigned as the dominant land-grazing animal throughout North America's grassland region (the Great Plains and the Prairies), from New Mexico in the south to northern Alberta. Moving across the landscape in large, free-roaming herds, their numbers and impressive physical attributes contributed to their widely-held reputation as a symbol of strength.

The plains bison (colloquially and perhaps better known as the buffalo) is easily identified by its high shoulder hump, the curved black horns on the sides of its head, and the thick, shaggy brown-black hair that make up its fur, beard and mane. With a height of over six feet (two meters) and weighing over a ton, the bull cuts a formidable figure indeed!

The endangered wood bison, the largest land mammal of North America. These majestic beasts may have poor eyesight, but their excellent hearing and keen sense of smell allow them to quickly detect intrusions into their environment. From a distance, the normally mild-mannered bison may appear quite docile; however, it is surprisingly fast and agile, and reacts aggressively when provoked or compelled to defend its young. Confrontations are also common each year during the summer mating season. Should one bull challenge another’s claim to a mate, either will attempt to assert itself by snorting and stamping at the ground. When this fails to discourage the challenger, a battle of wills ensues as the two competing suitors charge each other and butt heads in a display of brute force amidst the open prairie landscape.

Sadly, rapacious hunting pushed the majestic bison to near-extinction by the start of the 20th century. The widespread disappearance of the grasslands has also limited the prospects for the recovery of wild bison population. But some of the bison’s traditional migration routes can still be seen from the air – a permanent reminder of the past, carved into the landscape over time by the instinctive passage of millions of hooves.
