Product Description

Investment alert! This exclusive, luxurious Gold Maple Leaf 4-Coin Reverse Proof Fractional Set celebrates Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation in 1867, with four platinum plated .9999 pure gold maple leaf coins - and a tiny mintage limit of just 600!

N.B. - Each gold dollar in this collection weighs one full troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, making each much larger and heavier than the circulating dollar designs which they honor.

Sold out at the Mint!Talisman Coins and the Royal Canadian Mint are honoured to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Loonie Dollar! To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Canada’s favorite golden-hued circulation coin, this exquisite two-coin set revisits history by featuring the now-iconic loonie alongside the originally-proposed design for the circulation dollar - Canada’s $1 circulation Voyageur coin that never was!

Investment Opportunity!Affectionately dubbed "the loonie," Canada's $1 circulation coin has become a cherished national symbol for Canadians since its debut on June 30, 1987. The now-ubiquitous image of a loon looms large in Canadian iconography, but it wasn't the design originally intended for the circulating dollar! Had the original Voyageurs dies not vanished in transit, the famous Voyageur image would appear where the loon swims today.

2005 First Day of Minting Obverse & ReverseObverse - Loonie Gold Dollar
The Loonie gold dollar displays the design by Canadian artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael that has become synonymous with Canada’s currency: the iconic side-profile portrait of a common loon on a still lake. Here, the application of selective platinum plating shines the spotlight on the distinctive waterfowl, as it floats past the conifers rising up on a small island in the background. The entire scene is representative of the lakes that dot the Canadian Shield across much of the nation, and includes the engraved legends CANADA and DOLLAR, along with the commemorative dual dates 1987-2017 to mark the 30th anniversary of Canada’s circulating loonie dollar.

Obverse - Voyageurs Gold Dollar
The obverse and reverse of the historic Canada 1935 Silver Dollar, commemorating King George V's silver Jubilee (25th Anniversary), and the first to feature the famed Voyageurs design. The Voyageur gold dollar represents the one dollar circulation coin that never was. Largely unchanged from the design that appeared on Canadian silver dollars from 1935 to 1986, the “Voyageurs” image by sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn is a powerful nod to Canada’s early history and its reputation as an untamed frontier during the fur trade era. Selective platinum plating highlights the engraved scene in the center, where a canoe moves swiftly past the wind-swept pines that dot a semi-circular island. A voyageur paddles at the stern, while a Native American paddles at the bow. Between them we see a bundle of wrapped furs marked “HB”, for Hudson’s Bay Company, while stylized vertical rays above represent the aurora borealis (northern lights) lighting up the sky. The design also features the engraved legends CANADA and DOLLAR, along with the dual dates 1987-2017 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of circulating loonie dollar. The reverse features selective platinum plating on the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt as well as on the rim.
