The 1967 Design Competition
The second effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, by sculptor Arnold Machin, as it appeared on the original 1967 centennial coins. The legend reads ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God").A competition launched in 1964 invited Canadian artists and sculptors to submit proposals for six special, commemorative circulating coin designs, to be issued in 1967 for the 100th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. A $2,500 prize was offered for the winning design of each of the six coin denominations, but when the award committee reviewed all submissions, there was no clear winner. They therefore asked five more artists to submit new design concepts. On April 20, 1966, they finally announced a clear-cut winner: Canadian painter Alex Colville of Sackville, New Brunswick! And now his wildlife coin designs are a part of Canadian numismatic history!
