If the First World War introduced the concept of aerial combat, then the Second World War cemented the status of air power as one of the defining elements of modern warfare. Rapid advancement in aircraft technology produced the aluminum-clad bombers, cargo planes and jet-powered aircraft that gradually replaced the wooden-framed and fabric-clad biplanes of the Great War. Aircraft carriers allowed planes to extend aviation's reach farther than ever before, while a new technology, radar, bolstered defensive and offensive strategies in the skies.

The Consolidated Canso PBY Catalina Flying Boat Maritime Bomber
The Consolidated PBY Catalina, also known as the Canso in Canadian service, was an American flying boat, and later an amphibious aircraft, produced during the 1930s and 1940s by Consolidated Aircraft. It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of the Second World War. Catalinas served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the air forces and navies of many other nations.

During World War II, PBY Catalinas were used in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing, convoy escort, search and rescue missions (especially air-sea rescue), and cargo transport. The PBY was the most numerous aircraft of its kind ever built. The last active military PBYs were not retired from service until the 1980s. In 2014, nearly 80 years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to fly as a waterbomber (or airtanker) in aerial firefighting operations all over the world. This fine silver coin honors the versatile Cansos for their many contributions to the Allied cause during the Second World War, as well as the brave and heroic crews that flew them.

An Original Work of Military Fine Art
The meticulously detailed design by Canadian artist David A. Oram features an engraved depiction of an amphibious Consolidated Canso in action in the Atlantic theater of war during World War II. The legendary aircraft is brought to life once more by an outstanding amount of superb engraving, skilfully enhanced by the use of multiple finishes that convey the intensity of the situation - attacking a German U-boat!

Full color recreates the camouflage colors and markings of RCAF No. 162 Squadron - specifically, the white-grey fuselage, as well as the blue and green camouflage pattern along the upper wing and tail surfaces. The reporting marks “T” and “9816” are associated with the Canadian Canso piloted by Flt. Lt. R.E. McBride who, on June 3, 1944, which dropped four depth charges to destroy submarine U-477 in the waters of the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. The reverse features the effigy of the wartime monarch, King George VI, by T. H. Paget.

The Battle of Britain took place in the summer and autumn of 1940; it was the first major campaign of the Second World War to be fought entirely by air forces. It was also the battle that would decide the fate of the United Kingdom, and as a result, the outcome of the Second World War. During the Battle of Britain in World War II, the only thing standing between England and Nazi invasion was a small cadre of extremely brave fliers in their Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires. As Winston Churchill opined, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.
