An Original Work of Art
The design by Canadian wildlife artist Jean-Charles Daumas deftly combines sumptuous colors and intricate engraving that leaves one with an appreciation for nature’s beauty. The selective application of color recreates the soft pink and white hues of the magnolia (Magnoliaceae) blossoms, which evoke a warm, sunny day in May. One can imagine the musical call of the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) filling the air as it sits perched on the branch. Engraved in outstanding detail, the diminutive chickadee presents its right-side profile to allow the viewer to study its body shape and narrow tail.

Birds of a Feather...
An adult Black-Capped Chickadee pauses on a tree branch. The Black-Capped Chickadee has a black cap and bib with white sides to the face. Its underparts are white with rusty brown on the flanks and its back is gray. It has a short dark bill, short wings and a long tail. Males are larger. The tail is normally primarily slate-gray but has been observed in some Mid-Atlantic birds to be completely white and seemingly longer and more prominent than the normal gray tail.

The vocalizations of the Black-Capped Chickadees are highly complex. More than a dozen distinct types of calls and responses have been classified, many of which are complex. In this way the Black-Capped Chickadee is able to communicate different types of information. Chickadees' complex vocalizations are likely an evolutionary adaptation to their habitat: they live and feed in dense vegetation, and even when the flock is close together, individual birds tend to be out of each others' visual range.

During the fall migration and winter, chickadees often flock together. Many other species of birds (including titmice, nuthatches, and warblers) can often be found foraging with these flocks. Mixed flocks stay together because the chickadees call out whenever they find a good source of food. This calling-out forms cohesion for the group, allowing the other birds to find food more efficiently. When flocking, Black-Capped Chickadees quickly establish a rigid social hierarchy.
