An Original Work of Art!
Canadian artist Alexandra Lefort combines color with glow-in-the-dark effects and the striking convex shape to recreate a breathtaking view of Earth from space. The partial view of the Western Hemisphere places the focus on North America - specifically Canada - while the application of colour captures the nuances that characterize the different regions, and the different blues that mark the ocean depth. Within the outer band that frames the field, the 25th anniversary of Dr. Roberta Bondar’s historic space mission is commemorated by the number “25” and a miniature depiction of Space Shuttle Discovery as she appeared on Dr. Bondar’s personal mission crest. The same view of the continent at night employs photoluminescence to further enhance the viewer’s experience!

Glow in the Dark Photoluminescence Technology
This new outer space-themed coin features a new and patented technology from the Royal Canadian Mint, a special finish selectively applied to the silver proof. The RCM leads the world with its proprietary technologies, in which the finish is actually sealed on the coin. This photoluminescent technology makes the stars glow in the dark! The effect can be seen through the capsule and will not wear out. Sunlight is best, but fluorescent and incandescent lights (as found in most households) can also be used to activate the special photo-luminescent substance which makes the stars glow. For best effect, expose the coin to one of these light sources for about a minute, then view in the dark to reveal the stars in the night sky.
