North Americans have a deep, enduring connection with nature, evidenced by the many activities we all enjoy outside throughout the year - spring, summer, autumn or winter, rain or shine! This new, popular four coin series, the Great Canadian Outdoors, explores a continent at play in our favorite playground, the North American landscape! Using innovative glow-in-the-dark technology, the spellbinding qualities of the great outdoors at night, under the moon and stars, are beautifully recreated on each crown sized, pure silver, vibrantly colored coin that captures a moment in time, a luminous scene in recreation at its finest!

We begin with a luminous scene of downhill night skiing at a beautiful, tranquil mountain ski resort!

Canada 2017 Night Skiing Glow-in-the-Dark $15 SilverCelebrating the Great Outdoors - at Night!
The design by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel features life-like elements in this depiction of night skiing, where the view is truly breathtaking! Far from the grey, black and white colors that many associate with the winter, the setting is dominated by the cool-toned hues of blue and purple cast by moonlight. The engraving itself gives the design a sense of layered dimension, with the mountain range rising up in the background. In the foreground, the brightly attired skier carves his way down the slope and past the snow-covered evergreens, sending plumes of powder snow in the air behind him. The entire scene is further enhanced by the seamless integration of photo-luminescent (glow-in-the-dark) technology that mimics the twilight of lights at night. It softly illuminates the entire scene while adding a bright glow to the stars and moon overhead, the amber lights that edge the ski trails, even our skier’s run.

Enjoy this warm, life-like glow! The stars, the floodlights lining the ski runs…even the light cast on the trail and the skier’s back - each illuminated element dazzles thanks to the seamless integration of glow in the dark technology that recreates this perfect winter evening.

There are no legends on the obverse, to allow the complete majesty of the vignette to shine in its full glory.

Glow in the Dark Photoluminescent Technology
Photo-luminescent technology transports the viewer into the scene. The full effect of the coin is best viewed in the dark after placing it directly under a light source for at least 60 seconds. This enhances the ethereal quality of the outdoors at night by recreating the soft glow of a moonlit night on the snow-covered landscape below. Natural daylight and halogen light work best, followed by incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent light may take the longest to charge the coin.
