Investment Opportunity! A pysanka (Ukrainian: писанка, plural: pysanky) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", because the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. In the early 20th century, the art of the pysanka was carried abroad by Ukrainian emigrants to North= America, where the custom took hold. Concurrently, the traditional was banished (as a religious practice) by the Soviet regime in the Ukraine itself, where it was nearly forgotten. Museum collections were destroyed both by war and by Soviet thugs. Since Ukrainian independence in 1991, there has been a rebirth of this folk art in its homeland, and a renewal of interest in the preservation of traditional designs and research into its symbolism and history.

With its handcrafted beauty, rich symbolism and colorful patterns, the pysanka egg is one of the most beloved forms of traditional Ukrainian folk art, and a unique celebration of spring! On the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this time-honored Easter tradition and the awe-inspiring artistry behind each masterpiece. Not just a vibrant work of art and a great investment piece, this unique, pure silver proof makes a deeply meaningful and visually stunning gift to celebrate Easter, spring birthdays or any special occasion.

Why Didn't They Think of This Sooner? Happy Easter!
The design by Canadian artist Ann C. Morash captures the intricate beauty of a pysanka. Every element on this Ukrainian Easter egg is rich with symbolic meaning, including each of the individual colors. Yellow stands for youth and purity. Red represents the joy and passion in life, as well as folklore. Green is the color of fertility, health and spring, which brings hope and renewal. Black suggests the darkest time before dawn, and the ideas of constancy and eternity.

Canada 2016 Pysanka Traditional Ukrainian Easter Egg $20 Pure Silver Proof Egg-Shaped Coin with ColorWhen combined, these colors - and the motifs they suggest - result in a design that is open to many interpretations, but that is nonetheless a vibrant celebration of a full and colorful life. This design weaves together patterns and symbols that capture the artistry of an Ukrainian Easter Egg. Positioned within four triangular segments are golden blades of wheat, which convey best wishes for harvest and the soul of the clan. Beneath this overlay, the field is filled with the geometric figures that represent the sun and stars, to symbolize life, fortune and growth. These are framed by bands of waves that celebrate water as a life-sustaining element and harmony, which are in turn framed by evergreen boughs positioned along the edge, to symbolize eternal health and youth.
