5-Coin Musical Presentation CaseAn Original Work of Art
The design by Canadian wildlife artist Derek C. Wicks features a precision-engraved portrait of a female white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis). This little songbird is positioned in a way that offers a side profile view of its facial features as it lifts its long bill upwards; meanwhile, an overhead view of its back and wing plumage reveals a patterned appearance that is artfully conveyed by the detailed engraving. Selective color recreates the effect of sunlight alternately illuminating and casting shadows along the needled branch of a white spruce (Picea glauca), where a cone provides a sense of the nuthatch’s size.

The Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Nuthatch_RedBreasted2.jpgThe red-breasted nuthatch is easily missed as it creeps along tree limbs like a mouse - a very odd behavior that one wouldn't expect from a bird! Head-first it climbs down the tree trunk, searching for insects hidden in the nooks and crannies that were overlooked by other birds that climb up in an upright position.

The nuthatch's large hind toe and a stubby tail are adaptations for climbing upside down; the toe provides added stability and the short stubby tail enables the bird to maneuver amongst the branches. A sturdy, tapered beak also enables it to wedge nuts and hard seeds in crevices and hammer them open with its beak, another unique behavior that gave it its name. It also hides caches of seeds in tree trunks for winter food.

Of the 17 nuthatch species found throughout North America and Eurasia, three reside in Canada. The red-breasted nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is the most widely distributed. It can be readily identified by its distinctive eye stripes and ruddy underbody. It is a small, active bird with a diverse repertoire of calls. Its nasal “yank-yank” cry can often be heard before the bird is actually seen!
