Product Description

Get this Complete 3-Coin Collection of all three Forgotten Designs of 1927 silver proofs, taken directly from the Royal Canadian Mint's archives - the 1¢, 5¢ and 25¢ each minted in one full troy ounce of pure silver with reverse proof finish!

In 1927, three circulation coin designs were selected to commemorate Canada's Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. Alas, they never made it onto a single coin - until now! Ninety years later, the Royal Canadian Mint is re-visiting some of Canada’s numismatic lore: they've dug deep in their historic vaults to resurrect these design concepts and bring them back to life in this three-coin, pure silver set, which artfully bridges the past and Canada's 150th Anniversary. Each is minted in fetching, reverse proof finish, and all are legal tender (including the penny)!

The Historic Designs That Almost Never Were!
All three coins feature the unused circulation coin designs intended to commemorate Canada’s Diamond Jubilee in 1927. Working from the original sketches (and little else), the present-day Royal Canadian Mint’s engravers set out to interpret each artist’s vision as though the art had been entrusted to them at this very point in time, to mark Confederation’s 150th anniversary.

The 90-year-old concepts have been painstakingly adapted for modern engraving techniques, including a reverse proof finish that allows the more brilliant, mirrored engraved elements to shine brightly against the frosted, matte backdrop.

The one-cent coin features an Art Nouveau-inspired design by Canadian artist Gustav Hahn (1866-1962), with a bough of maple leaves encircling the commemorative dates 1867-2017.

The five-cent coin by Canadian artist J.E.H. MacDonald (1873-1932) features a crowned lion gripping a maple leaf in his paw as it stands perched on a rock, which represents the changing Canadian landscape cradled by the sea. Beneath the lion's forepaw is Canada’s motto, A MARI USQUE AD MARE (“From Sea to Sea”), while the commemorative dates 1867 and 2017 are inscribed above the lion.

A second design by MacDonald graces the 25-cent coin. It focuses on a majestic view of the iconic Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. The clock tower soars high above the clouds, surrounded by a ribbon-wrapped wreath of laurel leaves, from which hangs four bells - an ode to the Dominion Carillon, which was inaugurated on July 1, 1927, during the Diamond Jubilee festivities. Each bell bears engraved numbers that combine to form the commemorative dates 1867 and 2017.

A reverse proof portrait of His Majesty, King George V, in profile facing left. This portrait was executed by the artist, sculptor and designer Sir E. B. MacKennal. The legend GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: REX ET IND: IMP: (“George V, King and Emperor of India by the Grace of God”) replicates the design of the original coinage of the era.
