Product Description

Two timeless icons - the Maple Leaf and the Caribou - are united on this gorgeous, proof finish double-thick, high relief piedfort, plated in 24-karat gold and minted in one troy ounce of the purest silver on the planet - with a tiny mintage limit of just 7,500!

The caribou and the maple leafare the defining symbols of the great nation to the north; one is a national icon and a symbol of Canada’s North, the other predates the flag as an emblem of this land, its people, and our hope for the future. We reflect on Canada's amazing 150-year journey - and its future beyond - through the fusion of two iconic emblems that continue to inspire admiration by proudly representing all that is Canada. The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this heritage in ultra high relief with this magnificent, double-thick coin. This is the second-ever gold-plated piedfort from Canada, and one of only a very few silver piedforts ever from the RCM, with a tiny mintage of just 7,500! Our advice? Get it now!

A Truly Timeless Masterpiece That Combines Past, Present and Future
This masterful design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc pays tribute to Canada’s evolving history through the two foremost national icons. A transition marks the center of the field, with classic depictions on the left to represent the nation’s past, and more contemporary versions on the right to represent both the present and beyond.

Queen Elizabeth II, 24-Karat Gold Plated ReverseBoth icons are resplendent in selective 24-karat gold plating. In the forefront is the caribou, the majestic animal that symbolizes Canada’s north. Its back half is texturally detailed, while the front portion transitions into a stylized silhouette that offers a more modern take on this Canadian icon. Behind it is the iconic maple leaf, whose serrated edges and deeply veined lobes are fixtures throughout the design. The left features a more naturalistic, life-like appearance that evokes the design of the beloved Silver Maple Leaf (SML) coin, while the right portion places a strong emphasis on symmetry and conveys a sense of strength.

What is a Piedfort?
Hard to find and popular with collectors for more than a century, piedforts are highly sought after. We get asked all the time, "What is a piedfort?" There are two different, but related, stories of the origin of the word "piedfort". The first says that it literally means "strong foot" in French (from pied, foot and fort, strong). The second says this word was appropriated by the mint centuries ago to mean "heavy measure" or "heavy weight". In both cases, the sense of serious heft to the coin is obvious.

Angled view of the Piedfort showing its extra thick edge compared to a standard thickness coinOften the word "piedfort" is translated as "double-thick", but this is neither a literal translation nor a precisely accurate definition. Numismatically speaking, any coin that is 50% or more thicker than a standard version qualifies as a piedfort, although some piedforts are, indeed, twice as thick as normal.

Finally, the age-old question, "How is the word pronounced?" Coming from French, it is not pronounced as it is spelled; that is, don't say, "pide - fort". Rather, "pee - ay - four" (three syllables) is a good approximation.
