Investment Opportunity!A pysanka (Ukrainian: писанка, plural: pysanky) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", because the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. In the early 20th century, the art of the pysanka was carried abroad by Ukrainian emigrants to North= America, where the custom took hold. Concurrently, the traditional was banished (as a religious practice) by the Soviet regime in the Ukraine itself, where it was nearly forgotten. Museum collections were destroyed both by war and by Soviet thugs. Since Ukrainian independence in 1991, there has been a rebirth of this folk art in its homeland, and a renewal of interest in the preservation of traditional designs and research into its symbolism and history.

With its handcrafted beauty, rich symbolism and colorful patterns, the pysanka egg is one of the most beloved forms of traditional Ukrainian folk art, and a unique celebration of spring! On the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this time-honored Easter tradition and the awe-inspiring artistry behind each masterpiece. Not just a vibrant work of art and a great investment piece, this unique, pure silver proof makes a deeply meaningful and visually stunning gift to celebrate Easter, spring birthdays or any special occasion.

Happy Easter!
The design by Canadian artist Ann C. Morash captures the intricate beauty of a pysanka. Every element on this Ukrainian Easter egg is rich with symbolic meaning, including each of the individual colors.

The full color application allows glimpses of the coin’s reverse gold plating, which adds a golden nuance to select elements. As per Ukrainian tradition, each color carries deeper meaning: blue is for the sky, the air, and life-giving health; yellow signifies youth and purity; red is the color of joy and passion; green is associated with spring and its message of hope and renewal; and black suggests the darkest time before dawn, and the idea of eternity.

The outer edge features a partial view of a flower that symbolizes beauty and the blossoming of spring, followed by a linear pattern of branches and sprouting buds that represent nature’s awakening. As a stylistic representation of birds, the coxcombs within the next band symbolize spring and fertility, while the dots represent tears. The widest band features a traditional representation of stars and the sun as a symbol of life, good fortune and growth; the solar theme extends to the circles that represent eternity and the light of the sun, while the wavy lines signify the sun’s rays and human frailty. The small triangles represent a trinity: fire, air and water, or a more spiritual-based interpretation that includes the heavens.
