The goal is to put a new take on the familiar designs of Canada's natural heritage. As digital artists seek to recreate the physical world through dimensional images, modeling techniques based on geometric shapes have given way to a new visual style, called low poly art. This eye-catching series utilizes this art style to present a contemporary spin on and artistic interpretation Canadian wildlife.

With its snow-white plumage, the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a hauntingly beautiful ambassador for the northerly climes. The second coin in the Geometric Fauna series takes to the skies and re-imagines a classic North American species, by combining two different art styles — low poly art and realism — to achieve a courful, contemporary design brimming with majestic motion.

A meticulously detailed, full facial portrait of a snowy owl bird of prey, with its bright eyes highlighted in vibrant yellow and black enamel. This ingenious coin design brings together a mass of polygons to create a captivating image of a pair of snowy owls. A stunning design with exceptional relief that defines every polygon, and rich, bold colors that bring depth, dimension and a powerful sense of shadow and light to the scene. Breathtaking use of color furthers the design. In keeping with the low poly art style, lustrous colors contribute to the perception of depth and shadows.

An Original Work of Art!
Created by Canadian wildlife artist Claude Thivierge, the design fuses two different art styles - low poly art and a more realistic, true-to-life style - for a contemporary take on an enigmatic avian species. A colorful sunset provides the only hint of warmth in this color-over-engraved winter scene, where the sky is ablaze with orange and yellow hues. The open field conveys a sense of stillness as the landscape slumbers beneath its snow cover, where engraved relief adds textural details that mimic rolling drifts and mounds. The only sense of movement comes from two hauntingly beautiful snowy owls, which are comprised of polygon shapes that define the low poly art style. Suddenly, one of the owls takes flight. Flying close to the ground, the owl’s outstretched wings create the illusion of movement as it seemingly “shatters” the boundaries of the image and its geometric form, and smoothly transitions from abstract to realism.

The Majestic Snowy Owl
Majestic, powerful and eerily silent in flight, the
Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) embodies the enigmatic nature of Canada’s Arctic region. It is one of the largest owl species and contrary to common belief, can see equally well day or night - an ability that is particularly important for this northern resident that must hunt under the midnight sun of the Arctic summer.

While the snowy owl’s beautiful, fluffy insulated plumage may be the first thing that catches your eye, this bird of prey’s eyes are among its most distinctive features. Surprisingly, those cat-like, bright yellow eyes are similar in size and weight to the human eye; but unlike other birds, the snowy owl’s eyes face forward to allow for a heightened depth perception. Since their eyes cannot move freely within their sockets, owls have a flexible neck that enables them to turn their head 270 degrees in either direction, a truly remarkable ability!

The snowy owl is an important part of the ecosystem of the Arctic tundra and is protected from hunting across Canada. They prefer wide-open spaces across their vast range. The species breeds in the
Arctic and has wintering grounds in southern Canada, the northern United States, and Russia. Some birds remain in the Arctic year-round while others migrate intermittently. In the spring, the owls will curiously hop from snow patch to snow patch as the snow disappears from their wintering grounds. Some experts believe they do this to remain camouflaged. In 1987, the snowy owl was named the official bird of the province of Quebec.
