Product Description

A tribute to Canadian coinage - before Confederation, before there was a Canada! Get the decimal issues of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, minted in pure silver with an antique finish in this 4-coin fractional set!

Before Confederation, the provinces of Atlantic Canada were separate British North American colonies, each with their own particular cultural character - and, perhaps surprisingly, even their own coinages! This fact that adds a fascinating diversity to Canada’s numismatic history. This 4-coin pure silver set reaches back into history for a special look at the circulation coins issued in a time before each province joined Confederation, a time before there was the Canada that we know and love today. Get the low mintage 2 troy ounce silver coin for Nova Scotia, only in this set (and nowhere else)!

Four Historic, Traditional Designs from Before Confederation!
Enhanced by an antique finish, each coin is a reproduction of a pre-Confederation circulation coin from one of the four provinces of Atlantic Canada. All four bear designs by the famous British Mint designer, engraver and sculptor Leonard Charles Wyon; all are taken directly on decimal coins authorized by the colonial governments between 1861 and 1871.

Modeled after the 1861 issue, the Nova Scotia One Cent features a wreath of roses and mayflowers encircling St Edward’s Crown at the center, where an ornamental flourish and the date “2018” are engraved. This coin, the largest, is struck in 2 troy ounces of pure silver.

Incredibly, the Prince Edward Island One Cent was the only decimal coin ever struck for the province! Released in 1872, it features an oak tree motif adapted from the provincial great seals. The face value 1 CENT and Latin motto PARVA SUB INGENTI ("The small under [the protection of] the great") are inscribed beneath a vignette of a tall oak tree (representing Great Britain) sheltering three oak saplings (which symbolize the three counties of Prince Edward Island, King, Queen and Prince). This coin is minted in one full troy ounce of silver.

The Newfoundland Five Cent Piece is set apart by its understated, ornamental design. Based on an 1880 issue, it features the denomination 5 CENTS and the date 2018 framed by an arabesque pattern. This coin is struck in 1/2 troy ounce of pure silver.

The New Brunswick One Cent bears a striking resemblance to the Nova Scotia One Cent. It, too, features St Edward’s Crown framed by a wreath of roses and mayflowers, but with a few slight differences, including the absence of the rosebud seen on the lower right side of the Nova Scotia cent. This coin is minted in one quarter troy ounce of silver.
