Product Description

Get this ultimate grizzly bear coin - a huge grizzly fishes for salmon in a raging river, highlighted in beautiful, translucent blue enamel on this one and one-half troy ounce, pure silver rectangular proof, with a tiny mintage of just 3,500!

In the mighty rivers of British Columbia and Yukon, the salmon run is a spectacular natural occurrence and an awe-inspiring testament to one’s ability to persevere against all odds. Swimming against the current and leaping over obstacles, the hard-fighting fish’s odyssey from sea to spawning grounds draws many spectators along the way, including the bears and eagles that depend on salmon for their survival. Your pure silver coin is perfectly shaped for a magnificent panorama featuring two emblematic species, the grizzly bear and the sockeye salmon, with predator and prey pictured together in a beautiful river setting. Your rectangular coin is also the first to combine two technologies: translucent blue enamel tints the water without obscuring the underwater view, while ultra high relief engraving heightens the hungry grizzly bear’s imposing stature.

A great North American Grizzly Bear, bellowing fearsomely! An Original Work of Art
Designed by Emily Damstra, your coin features a river setting in Western Canada, where the annual sockeye salmon run is underway. Translucent blue enamel adds a beautiful blue hue to the water while allowing an underwater view of the engraved sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and the gravel-lined riverbed. Engraved in ultra high relief to heighten its imposing stature, a grizzly bear (Ursos arctos) has waded into the shallow water to catch its meal. The split-shot nature of the design is a reminder of the salmon’s crucial role in this ecosystem, whether sustaining other wildlife or providing marine-derived nutrients that support plant life.

This solitary symbol of strength is beautifully brought to life through each engraved detail, from the textured appearance of its fur to its soft facial expression. Slowly moving along the rocky shores, our grizzly patiently waits while staring down into the water. One of its powerful forepaws is raised, its claws ready to swipe a nutrient-rich meal from the river. The selective application of translucent blue enamel adds a bluish hue to the gently lapping waters, as though reflecting a cloudless sky overhead. The enamel’s glistening quality also infuses the design with light, while allowing a glimpse of what lies beneath the water: the migrating salmon, the objects of the grizzly’s utmost desire.

The Fearsome Grizzly Bear
Grizzly Bear It's a true thrill to wildlife lovers when they catch a glimpse of the mythic grizzly in the wild! The fearsome grizzly bear is probably the most dangerous land mammal in North America. These massive and powerful animals can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and stand up to 8 feet tall on their hind legs, yet are capable of running at speeds up to 35 miles per hour! Perhaps best known as salmon hunters during the spawning season, grizzlies are opportunistic omnivores, eating almost anything in season, from fruits, nuts, honey and berries, to insects, grubs and small mammals, to much larger prey. As such they can be very dangerous to humans, especially when startled or when defending their young. One bite from a grizzly bear can crush a person's skull, so powerful are its jaws. Although they were held in high esteem for eons by Native Americans because of their spirits, grizzlies have been eradicated throughout most their range in North America, partly by hunters for trophies, and partly because of simple fear.

Technology Note - Enamel
The vibrant blue of the Arctic ocean and underwater portion of the iceberg features the Royal Canadian Mint’s patented enamel technology. This proprietary technique applies deep, rich, semi-opaque colors to the coin, while the glaze over these hues enhances the effect of real enamel.
