Product Description

The Royal Canadian Mint brings us innovation at its finest - a five troy ounce, pure silver multi-dimensional coin! The carefully hand-carved statuette (by Canadian wildlife artist Dave Zachary) of ahumpback whale's tail disappearing into the translucent blue enamel sea rises out of the proof coin!

Investment Opportunity!Rising up from this spectacular coin's surface, the smoothly sculpted whale's tail is hand-carved by Canadian artist Dave Zachary and his workshop of sculptors. The humpback whale's genus name is Megaptera, meaning “huge wings” — an apt designation for the acrobatic denizen of the deep, given its spectacular breaching displays. This summer visitor to Canada's northern waters moves with an energetic grace in and above the waves, propelled by a fluke as unique as our fingerprints. But in a barrier-breaking gesture, that same tail raised in the water signals its imminent dive back into the deep; in that brief moment, we are reminded that life above and below the surface is beautifully interconnected.

Original Work of Art by Two Renowned Artists!
The ice cold waters of Canada's north catch the eye in this outstanding design by Royal Canadian Mint engraver Cecily Mok. An even application of translucent enamel over a proof finish stands in for the ocean's sparkling Arctic-blue waters, while allowing a glimpse of what lies below: the engraved outlines of a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) and its calf. The large cetacean signals its intent to dive by raising its fluke above the water, represented here in sculptural form. Hand-carved by Native American artist Dave Zachary, the tail smoothly arches above the coin's surface and is made from Canadian soapstone, with color and marbling variations that make each piece unique. Ice floes edge the waters and bear the engraved words CANADA at top, while the face value 50 DOLLARS and the year 2018 are at the bottom.

Despite its unusual shape, each coin is safely housed inside a dome-like capsule that protects it. The coin-cum-statue rests on a wooden plinth or base, lined with black velvet, that conceals a hidden compartment for the certificate. The entire base and dome assembly is protected by a black outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.

Obverse
Designed by Canadian big game wildlife sculptor Karl Lansing, your coin offers a three-dimensional depiction of a species whose cry is synonymous with the remote beauty of the North American wilderness. Shaped like a grey wolf (Canis lupus), the cast-silver statue rises up from the coin’s surface to convey the wild canine’s strength as it steps across the uneven terrain. The 24-karat gold plating enhances the carefully sculptured details that give the statuette a life-like quality, including the varying texture of the wolf's fur and its famously strong jaw that is lifted towards the sky to release its iconic howl. The date of issue and the denomination also appear.

Reverse
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian Coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") also appears.
