The 49th Parallel
The Convention of 1818 was a treaty between Great Britain and the United States. It stipulated that the western boundary between British North America and the United States should follow the 49th parallel from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains (known to many English speakers as the "Stony Mountains" at that time). But it divided more than Americans and British North Americans; the international boundary also transected the ancestral lands of several Native American tribes.

Outstanding Coin Design!
On the special-edition 50-cent coin, the image by artist Steve McPhee features the red-and-white flag of Canada, which is superimposed over the entirety of Canada on an outline map. An engraved line highlights the International Boundary known as the 49th parallel, which separates Canada from the United States to the south, and marks its bicentennial in 2018. In the dark, glow-in-the-dark technology lights up the whole map, along with the latitude and longitude lines.
Glow in the Dark Technology
It's no secret that the Royal Canadian Mint's photoluminescent coins are among the fastest selling and most popular collector coins ever offered! Struck with the Mint's patented glow-in-the-dark technology, these beauties wow and astound every time! To activate the effect, hold the coin set under a bright light source for 30-60 seconds, and then view coin in darkness.

Highly Significant Classic Circulating Coinage Designs

Polar Bear
Canada’s bi-metallic two-dollar coin, launched in 1996, features a polar bear, the world’s largest terrestrial carnivore, which can weigh over 1400 pounds (650 kilograms). It lives near the cold seas and frozen ice of Canada’s far-north.

Common Loon
Launched in 1987, the reverse of the one-dollar coin, represents a common loon swimming against the rugged backdrop of the Canadian Shield. The loon’s haunting calls are one the quintessential sound of the Canadian wilderness in summer.

Caribou
An enduring symbol of the Canadian north, the majestically-antlered caribou has remained a Canadian icon since first appearing on the twenty-five-cent piece in 1936.

Bluenose Schooner
In the 1921, Atlantic Canadians built one of the finest racing and fishing vessels in Canadian history, the Bluenose. Known for its speed, and almost unbeatable in a race, this ship first appeared on the ten-cent piece in 1937.

Beaver
The beaver is Canada’s national animal. Highly sought after for its rich fur in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was the mainstay of the colonial economy for centuries. Today, the beaver is revered as a symbol of hard work and perseverance.

Obverse
The obverse of the half dollar coin features the one-year-only design described above.  The traditional or classic circulation coins of Canada as described above.
Reverse

The reverse of each coin features Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") and mint mark also appear.

Packaging
The coins are sealed inside a full color presentation card, with two die cut support stands that allow for easy tabletop display.
