Product Description

Celebrate the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth with this dollar-size silver coin!

Sold out at the Mint! In 2006 America and the world celebrated the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birth, the first of our founding fathers to reach this milestone! Franklin was a true renaissance man, with a curriculum vitae too vast to detail here. In the course of his legendary life, he was a journalist, printer, satirist, poet, scholar, musician, philosopher, public servant, educator, economist, librarian, politician, ambassador, diplomat, meteorologist, scientist, and inventor (whew!).

Franklin the inventor was a genius and of world-wide renown. He invented the lightning rod and the electrical battery, and labeled electrical charges with the names by which we still know them, “positive” and “negative”. He even established the principle of “conservation of charge”, which has stood the test of over 200 years of useful application.

Franklin was also crucial to the founding of the United States. His diplomatic mission to France resulting in French intervention in the American Revolution, without which freedom from Great Britain would not have happened. Furthermore, Franklin was the only - and oldest - person to sign the three principal documents of American liberty: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Treaty of Paris.

There is a link below to a well-illustrated article about Franklin the scientist and diplomat, as well as his connections to certain coins.
