Sold out at the Mint!In 2001 the United States celebrated its 225th anniversary as a free, sovereign, and independent nation - the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. The U.S. Mint didn't release anything to commemorate this milestone. However, our friends north of the border struck this special medal. It features Old Glory in a stunning red, white and blue design on the obverse, and an American eagle on the reverse. The American flag is surrounded by a ring of 50 stars, one for each state in the Union. Above the flag is the legend LIFE, LIBERTY, HAPPINESS, while below is the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM ("From many, one").

Note - This listing is for the cupro-nickel version of this medal. A sterling silver version may also be available.

Waving_American_Flag.jpgOld Glory
The flag of the United States of America, known as the Stars and Stripes, consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars alternating with rows of five stars. The fifty stars on the flag represent the fifty states of the Union, and the thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that rebelled against Great Britain and became the first states in the Union.

The American flag has been nicknamed "Old Glory", and was immortalized during the War of 1812, when Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner (now the national anthem of the United States of America) while watching the shelling of Fort McHenry in Baltimore harbor.

Specimen Finish
The American Flag and Eagle medal features the Royal Canadian Mint's proprietary specimen finish, which is really a three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (raised area or relief) includes both brilliant and frosted finishes, while the fields (background) are subtly striated. These combine to give this medal a special aesthetic appeal and flair. The RCM is the only mint in the world to employ this finish!
