Sold out at the Mint!Canada's 50 cent coin bears the Coat of Arms of Canada and honors Canada's founding nations: England, Scotland, Ireland and France. The current Coat of Arms was redesigned in 1997 and incorporates the motto Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam ("Desiring a better homeland"). The half dollar was actually the first coin ever struck in Canada, on January 2, 1908, marking the official opening of the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint. Originally composed of silver, its composition was changed to nickel-plated steel in 2001.

The national coat of arms of Canada, a heraldic design with all of Canada's armorial devices. The fifty cent design was first used on the Canadian half-dollar in 1937 and has been modified several times since. The denomination and date of issue also appear.


Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") also appears.
The first day of minting coin is handsomely displayed in an large (8 inches by 5 inches) presentation folder with full-color illustrations and bilingual text.
