Product Description

The 2007 entry in the ever-popular Sower series commemorates the 5th anniversary of the introduction of the Euro!

Sold out at the Mint!In 1897 Oscar Roty began a revolution that soon spread across the globe. With the introduction of his realistic, alluring, full-body portrait of the Sower, France (and eventually most of the world, including the United States) said goodbye to static, staid and idealized profile portraits of monarchs and Liberty. There was a new goddess in town, and she strode confidently forward into a golden age of coin design, the rising sun illuminating her footsteps. The echoes of this revolution in numismatic art reverberate to this day.

SOWER SILVER FRANCMasterpiece of Art Nouveau Design
Known in France as La Semeuse, Oscar Roty's iconic Sower has been beguiling coin collectors for more than a century! Despite her age she looks better than ever as she sows peace and prosperity for her people. A medalist and grand master of the art nouveau style, Roty designed the fin-de-siècle beauty in 1897, when she sauntered onto several denominations of French coins, including the keystone silver franc.

It is widely believed that Roty's Sower inspired several classic American coin designs, including Augustus Saint-Gauden's $20 double eagle gold piece; Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty half dollar (later recycled for the American Eagle silver bullion dollar); and the U.S.-Philippines silver centavos and peso designed by Melicio Figueroa. The Sower appears to this day on French coinage, both circulating euro coins as well as silver and gold proof commemoratives.

Each year the Sower series continues with a new commemoration of French culture on the reverse. In 2007 France celebrates the 5th anniversary of the introduction of the Euro currency, which replaced the Franc (and a number of other European currencies) in 2002. To mark this event, all four coins in this program feature a common 5 euro denomination, the first time in years that all coins in a French program have carried the same face value. These four proofs are:

37 mm silver proof (normally denominated 1.5 euro)
50 mm, 5 ounce silver proof (mintage of 500; normally denominated 20 euro)
          - The first 5 ounce silver proof ever in this series!
14 mm, 1/25 ounce pure gold proof (the first ever French coin of this size!)
31 mm, 1/2 ounce gold proof (mintage of 500; normally denominated 20 euro)

Investment Note
The Sower 1/25 ounce pure gold proof is not only the first "smallest gold" coin in the long-running Sower series, it's the first smallest gold coin ever minted by Monnaie de Paris! As such, it offers the savvy collector the opportunity to own a beautiful, pure gold proof at an extremely reasonable price. Normally France only mints pure gold coins in the much larger (and much more expensive!) 50 euro (one ounce) and 100 euro (five ounce) denominations. In fact, it's been nearly five years (since 2003's Franc Germinal 1/10 ounce 1/4 euro) that France has issued a smaller denomination pure gold coin. This stunning gold proof features the iconic Walking Liberty and puts pure gold in the realm of any collector!

The allegorical figure of the Sower strolls in front of the rays of the newly-risen sun, sowing the seeds of good fortune for her country at the dawning of a new day. More than a century after her birth, Oscar Roty's timeless beauty remains a classic and readily-identified emblem of the French Republic. The date and RF, for "République Française" ("The French Republic") also appear.

A Euro sign is superimposed by twelve stars, one for each of the 12 original countries of the Eurozone. The dates 2002-2007 mark the fifth anniversary of the euro, as indicated by the French legend CINQUIÈME ANNIVERSAIRE DE L'EURO. The highly appropriate denomination of 5 euro and the motto of the French Republic, LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ are also indicated.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in the traditional, blue Monnaie de Paris gift box with gilt lettering. An individually numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
