Product Description

This year the Annual BU Silver Dollar features a Native American war chief and a new, low mintage limit!

Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant), War Chief of the Mohawk
Sold out at the Mint! Thayendanegea or Joseph Brant (sometimes spelled Brandt or Brand, c. 1742–1807) was a Mohawk leader and British military officer during the American Revolutionary War. He was perhaps the most well-known North American Indian of his generation. He met many of the most significant people of the age, including George Washington and King George III of England.

Joseph Brant Brant was born on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, near present-day Akron, Ohio. He was named "Thayendanegea", which can mean "two wagers (sticks) bound together for strength", or possibly "he who places two bets." Thayendanegea's life was greatly influenced by an alliance with the British. He was given the Christian name of Joseph Brant and received an English education.

Thayendanegea was just a youth of about 15 when fought his first battle for the British during the French and Indian War. But this young warrior was also a visionary. He clearly understood that native people faced inevitable change and united various nations to protect their interests. As war chief of the Six Nations and a British military captain, Brant was respected by both sides. And when the American War of Independence ended he acted as statesman and negotiated land for the Six Nations.

They settled in the Grand River Valley of Ontario, where Brant played a key role in their economic, political and religious lives, bringing a school as well as a saw and grist mill to the community. Yet despite his seemingly British way of life, Brant's dream of native sovereignty endured. George Romney's portrait of this great leader, painted during Brant's first trip to England in 1775-1776 and pictured at right hangs in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

Thayendanegea was equally at ease with a tea cup or a tomahawk. He adopted a new culture without dishonoring his Native American roots. Through his voice and his actions, Brant shaped the future for his people, and two centuries later he is not forgotten. Chief Thayendanegea is one of only 14 leading Canadian military figures commemorated at the Valiants Memorial in Ottawa.

Investment Note
This year the mint has imposed a strict mintage limit of only 35,000 on the Annual Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Dollar. All collectors of Canadian dollar coins and all silver dollar collectors need this coin, so this seems like a sure sell-out.
