POPE JOHN PAUL IISaint John Paul II's Canonization
The movement for Pope John Paul II's canonization began in 2005, shortly after his death, with the traditional five year waiting period waived. On December 19, 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI. John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed a first miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle attributed to the late pope was approved on July 2, 2013 and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II will be canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII (who inaugurated the Second Vatican Council). Like Pope John XXIII, John Paul II's feast day is not celebrated on the date of his death (as is customary), but on October 22nd, the anniversary of his papal inauguration in 1978.

In 1978 Karol Wojtyla was elected supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and took the name John Paul II, becoming the first Polish pope in history. In his inaugural ceremony in Rome, Jan Pawel II pronounced his famous words, "Be not afraid." This sentiment would be reflected in his life, teachings and activity.

In 1981 an assassination attempt weakened Pope John Paul II's health but strengthened his resolve to spread the gospel of love to people of all faiths throughout the world, especially to youths and children. During his papacy the pontiff visited over 125 countries on all the inhabited continents. The unwavering leadership and commitment of Jan Pawel II against the domination of his homeland by Soviet Marxism is credited with helping to drive communism from Poland in 1989.

On April 2, 2005, beset by many infirmities and after a protracted illness, the Holy Father passed into eternity. The life he led represents one of the most influential and inspirational of the twentieth century.
