Product Description

The magnificent White Frigate of Poland, the Dar Pomorza, graces this historic issue!

The 2005 entries in the History of the Zloty (Dzieje Zlotego) program commemorate the silver 2 Zlote and 5 Zlotych coins of 1936, which featured a sailing ship on them. The ship is the Dar Pomorza ("Gift of Pomerania"), purchased with donations made by Pomeranian citizens. She has long and storied history. For over 50 years, beginning in 1929, she was based in Gdynia and served as the training vessel of the Polish Naval Academy. During this time she received her nickname, the "White Frigate", with over 13,000 sailors learning seamanship aboard her. In 1934-35 she completed an around-the-world cruise, and waited out World War II interned in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1982 she was decommissioned and moored in Gdynia harbor, where she serves as a museum ship, in tribute to all who sailed on her. The 10 Zlotych coin in this series features a superb view of Dar Pomorza clipping along under full sail.

The History of the Zloty Program
As Poland joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, the Mint of Poland began to contemplate the inevitable transition from Zloty to Euro currency. In May 2006 Poland set its target date for the introduction of the Euro to January 1, 2011, pending approval of the European Central Bank. In the meantime the Mint of Poland is remembering its domestic denomination, the Zloty! Once per year two coins (a 2 Zl and a 10 Zl) will be released that recall the aesthetic beauty of the native Polish coins. The coins in the History of the Zloty program are interesting for several different reasons. Each reproduces a classic Polish coin design meticulously and faithfully. Also, each features the motif of an older coin on a newer coin. This "coin on coin" theme constitutes a very popular subject matter for coin collectors. Finally, each of the coins in this series is handsomely engraved and artistically pleasing. Celebrate the legacy of Polish money with the History of the Zloty program!
