Product Description

This cool new silver proof features a square hole in the middle - the first Polish coin of its kind!

Sold out at the Mint! The mint of Poland has released a special, four coin program to commemorate Polish participation at the 2008 Summer Olympiad. Each of the four coins depicts a popular summer Olympic sport, including rowing, swimming and water polo, windsurfing, and The Forbidden City in the heart of Beijing, the capital of Chinapole vaulting. The 2008 Summer Olympics are being held in Beijing. The capital city of China, Beijing is also known as Pekin (in Polish), and was formerly called Peking in English.

The Olympics always seem to stir up major controversies, and the Beijing Olympics had more than their fair share of them: lip-syncing prepubescents, the manhandling of foreign journalists, CGI fireworks, Tibetan and religious protesters, the stabbing death of an American citizen, and the underage, prepubescent Chinese "women's" gymnastic team, to name a just a few. Still, the Chinese spent a lot of money to show the world how prosperous and advanced their version of civilization is, so human rights violations aside, things could have gone a whole lot worse.

Poland at the Olympics

Catching a wave while windsurfing is a great way to relax - or die! The Polish Olympic Committee was created in 1918, and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1919. Poland first participated at the Paris Summer Olympic Games in 1924, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympics since then, except for the 1984 Los Angeles Games, when they participated in the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Poland has also participated in every Winter Olympic Games. Polish athletes have won a total of 261 medals, with track and field their most successful sport.

Overall results for Poland in 2008 were nearly identical to the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, with ten medals total won, including three gold medals, by:
Tomasz Majewski, in Men's Shot Put
The four man Polish team, in the Men's Quadruple Sculls Rowing (pictured above)
Leszek Blanik, in Men's Gymnastic Vault

Technology Note
This beautiful Chinese-styled silver proof, the very first Polish coin to feature a square hole in the middle, was inspired by the coins of ancient China. About 523 B.C. cast bronze coins with square holes came into regular use for trade. The square hole enabled them to be easily strong onto leather cords in units of 1,000 (the main purchasing unit of the time) for easy transportation. Many believe that its round shape symbolized heaven, while the square hole represented earth.

If you're interested in square-hole oriental coins, we are currently offering original, 340-year-old 1668 1 Mon Kanei Tsuho Square Hole Copper coins with the Bun Mint Mark for Edo (Tokyo), from Japan, at a value price!
