Sold out at the Mint! The Armenian Mouflon (Ovis ammon gmelin or Ovis orientalis orientalis) is a species of wild ovine. It is sometimes called the Iranian Red Sheep; in central Asia it is well-known as the Argali. It is far and away the largest wild sheep on Earth, standing as high as five feet tall and weighing nearly 400 pounds! Some Mouflon have been known to reach six feet in length. They exhibit a distinct and immediately recognizable coloration. Social animals, they travel in herds for safety and protection.

The wild mouflon of Armenia, up close and personalHorns are a much more prominent feature on these wild sheep than on their domesticated cousins. They have a corkscrew shape with rounded combat edges. Males and females both have horns, although the horns of females are smaller. The male’s horns can be up to six feet in length, measured along the coil.

These horns are not merely for show or decoration - the mating habits of the world’s largest sheep can be quite violent! Huge rams weighing 350 pounds run head first into each other while in rut. They smash their horns together in intense combat designed to determine the pecking order of the males. Dominant males then mate with mature females.

The wild mouflon of Armenia in its natural habitatThe Mouflon is extremely endangered in Armenia. In 1970 there were between 200-400 in the wild, however now there are only 42 known alive.  Its chief remaining habitat is inside the Khosrov Preserve, where individuals live at altitudes between 2500 and 10,000 feet. They frequent mountain slopes and mountain field plateaus, in some of the highest reaches of the Caucasus. The Mouflon is endangered because of illegal poaching and the development of agriculture in Armenia.

This is the eleventh entry in the ongoing "Wild World of the Caucasus - Endangered Species of Armenia" coin program. Each coin features an animal that is on the Red Book of Armenia endangered or protected species list. This fact is well-illustrated on each coin by the two red lines that underscore the animal's names in Latin and Armenian.

Investment Note
This coin has a total mintage of only 3,000, which is very low for such a reasonably-priced silver proof. Taking into account the large size (nearly 39 mm in diameter, or crown-sized), the animal theme featuring an endangered species, the colorization, and the beauty of the design, we feel that this is a great buy-and-hold for any numismatic portfolio. All previous entries in this series have shown significant (and in some cases, extremely dramatic) appreciation above the issue price.

COAT OF ARMS OF ARMENIAA superbly realistic depiction of the endangered Armenian Mouflon or wild sheep, which stands alert, on the lookout for predators. The scientific (Latin genus and species) name OVIS AMMON GMELIN appears above and the animal's Armenian name appears below, while the red stripes underscoring the names emphasize its endangered status.

Each coin is encapsulated and the "quality" is described on the certificate as "Brilliant Uncirculated", which is true enough. However, the coins exhibit fully-mirrored fields and frosted cameo relief on the designs. We believe that these are therefore proof-finish commemoratives, struck with proof dies on specially-prepared proof planchets.
