Pisces ChartThe Constellation Pisces
Pisces is popularly associated with the story of Aphrodite, goddess of love, and her son Eros, who escaped from the monster Typhon by transforming themselves into fish, tying themselves together with a cord, and hiding underwater until the monster was gone. Zeus, hearing of their clever escape, rewarded them by placing them in the sky as a constellation.

The constellation Pisces is found in an area of the night sky known as the Sea or the Water, which includes many constellations associated with liquid, such as Capricorn, Aquarius, and Eridanus.

The constellation is often seen as a pair of fish connected by a string or cord. It also can be seen as two stick-figure bodies, representing Aphrodite and Eros bound together.

The Sign of Pisces
PiscesAs a sign of the zodiac, Pisces is classed as a negative or feminine, introverted sign. Its element is water and its quality is mutable. Traditionally, in astrology, Pisces was ruled by the planet Jupiter, but after the planet Neptune was discovered it was then considered the ruler of Pisces. Its opposite sign is Virgo. Pisces' period, when it is occupied by the Sun, runs from February 19 to March 20, and the 12th House is the house Pisces rules.

In astrology the astrological signs of the twelve houses equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrological beliefs, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs at the same time are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression.

Gemstone Note
The white zircon crystal symbolizes the moonstone, the lucky stone of those born under the sign of Pisces. The zircon crystal on the obverse is not an accidental choice. Zircon is a naturally-occurring, semiprecious gemstone mined in the mountains of southern Poland. It can be found in a range of colors. Interestingly, zircon crystals are the oldest minerals found on earth. Ongoing scientific research using these crystals has helped to establish the age of the Earth, with the current consensus being about 4.4 billion years old (the age of the oldest zircons found to date). It is therefore appropriate that the oldest substance on earth, and a beautiful, sparkling gemstone at that, is used to portray the timelessness of the twinkling stars in the night sky.

Pisces Symbol Obverse
A beautifully-engraved rendition of Pisces, the two fish tied together, set in the colorfully illustrated night sky, with a zircon crystal gemstone in the shape of a star. The astrological sign of Pisces is also depicted. The English PISCES appears above and the constellation's Armenian name appears below.

In the center, the national coat of arms of Armenia, surrounded by the twelve signs of the zodiac. The legend REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA in English and Armenian, as well as the date of issue and the denomination, are indicated.

Each coin is encapsulated and accompanied by a bilingual (Armenian and English) certificate of authenticity. The certificate states that the "Quality" is "uncirculated", which is true (the coin is certainly uncirculated), but does not adequately describe the actual finish. These are proof finish coins, exhibiting fully-mirrored fields and frosted cameo relief on the designs. We therefore describe these as proof-finish commemoratives, struck with proof dies on specially-prepared and polished proof planchets.
