Queensland
A friendly sea turtle scoots along the sea floor. Queensland is the state of Australia which occupies the north-eastern section of the mainland continent. It is bordered by the Northern Territory to the west, South Australia to the southwest and New South Wales to the south. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. The state is Australia's second largest in area, following Western Australia, and the country's third most populous after New South Wales and Victoria.

Queensland was made a British Crown Colony that was separated from New South Wales on 6 June 1859, a date now celebrated annually as Queensland Day. The area that currently forms Brisbane was originally the Moreton Bay penal colony, intended as a place for recidivist convicts who had offended while serving out their sentences in New South Wales. The state later encouraged free settlement, and today Queensland's economy is dominated by the agricultural, tourist and natural resource sectors.

The capital and largest city is Brisbane, located in the southeast of the state. It is a modern, cosmopolitan city and Australia's third largest, after Sydney and Melbourne. with a population of nearly two million.

The coin’s obverse depicts a full-color composite image of the skyline of the city of Brisbane (pictured below), the Gold Coast, and a coral reef. The design includes a sea turtle, a sight always popular with those visiting the Great Barrier Reef, and a Cooktown Orchid, Queensland’s floral emblem (in the foreground of the picture below).

Investment Note
We like this coin for several reasons. It is large (40.60 mm diameter), struck in pure silver, and is very handsomely colored. Animals in general, and turtles in particular, are very popular themes with collectors. Finally, the mintage limit for this coin is exceedingly low for an Australian silver dollar - only 2,500, with more releases to follow in this series. Don't delay, we recommend one of these great colored silver proofs today!

Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.
