The Australian Capital Territory
A dramatic view of the capital of Australia, Parliament House resides in Canberra inside the Australian Capital Territory or ACT, surrounded entirely by the state of New South Wales. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing internal territory. It is an inland enclave in New South Wales, situated in bushland.

The ACT was conceived during the Federation conventions of the late 19th century as a neutral location for a new national capital. This was because of fierce rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, each claiming the right to be the national capital. Territory was transferred to the Commonwealth by the state of New South Wales in 1911, and construction of the capital, Canberra, began in 1913.

The coin’s obverse depicts a colored illustration of Australia’s Parliament House, situated on Canberra’s Capital Hill. The design includes the Royal Bluebell, the Territory’s floral emblem, and a Gang-gang Cockatoo, its official territorial animal.

Investment Note
We like this coin for several reasons. It is large (40.60 mm diameter), struck in pure silver, and is very handsomely colored. Animals in general, and birds in particular, are very popular themes with collectors. Finally, the mintage limit for this single show special is exceedingly low for an Australian silver dollar - only 2,500, with more releases to follow in this series. Don't delay, we recommend one of these great colored silver proofs today!

Elise Martinson is an Australian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who loves animals.About the Artist
The creator of the original artwork for both the coins and the colorful, outer boxes for the Celebrate Australia series is Elise Martinson. Elise is an Australian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who loves animals (as you can see from her photo!). After studying multimedia design for four years and then working for year and a half as a graphic designer, she became eager to follow her dreams of creating 3D art for games or movies. Realizing that the limiting factor to 2D and 3D artwork was not software knowledge, but rather the ability to create concepts and accurately render them, she is now dedicated to further cultivating her drawing ability. Elise currently designs both coins and graphic artwork for the Perth Mint, and still hopes to break into the games industry one day as a concept or production artist. Three of her better-known projects for the Mint are the Outer Space Dollars 9-Coin Set, the Backyard Bugs 9-Coin Set and the Bush Babies Program. Elise was formerly a resident of Melbourne, Victoria but now resides in Perth, Western Australia. Here are links for Elise Martinson's online blog and her professional website.

Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.
