Western Australia
Western Australia (abbreviated WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of the Australian continent. The nation's largest state (and the second largest subnational entity in the world!), it has 2.1 million inhabitants (10% of the national total), 85% of whom live in the southwest corner of the state. The people of Western Australia are often colloquially referred to as sandgropers, the common name of an insect found on sand dunes around Perth.

A young western grey kangaroo bounds across the Australian outback. The state's capital and largest city is Perth. With a population of 1,650,000 (2009), Perth ranks fourth amongst the nation's cities, with a growth rate consistently above the national average. The city was founded on 12 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the political center of the free settler Swan River Colony. It has continued to serve as the seat of Government for Western Australia to the present day. Perth is ranked 4th on The Economist's 2008 list of the World's Most Livable Cities. It became known worldwide as the "City of Lights" as city residents lit their houselights and streetlights as American astronaut John Glenn passed overhead while orbiting the earth in Friendship 7 in 1962. The city repeated its feat as Glenn passed overhead on the Space Shuttle in 1998.

The coin’s obverse depicts a full color panoramic view of the Perth city skyline, with a black swan on the Swan River. The design includes a kangaroo, and Western Australia’s floral emblem, a Red and Green Kangaroo Paw.

Investment Note
We like this coin for several reasons. It is large (40.60 mm diameter), struck in pure silver, and is very handsomely colored. Animals in general, and kangaroos in particular, are very popular themes with collectors. Finally, the mintage limit for this single show special is exceedingly low for an Australian silver dollar - only 2,500, and it completes this series! Don't delay, we recommend one of these great colored silver proofs today!

Elise Martinson is an Australian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who loves animals.About the Artist
The creator of the original artwork for both the coins and the colorful, outer boxes for the Celebrate Australia series is Elise Martinson. Elise is an Australian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who loves animals (as you can see from her photo!). After studying multimedia design for four years and then working for year and a half as a graphic designer, she became eager to follow her dreams of creating 3D art for games or movies. Realizing that the limiting factor to 2D and 3D artwork was not software knowledge, but rather the ability to create concepts and accurately render them, she is now dedicated to further cultivating her drawing ability. Elise currently designs both coins and graphic artwork for the Perth Mint, and still hopes to break into the games industry one day as a concept or production artist. Three of her better-known projects for the Mint are the Outer Space Dollars 9-Coin Set, the Backyard Bugs 9-Coin Set and the Bush Babies Program. Elise was formerly a resident of Melbourne, Victoria but now resides in Perth, Western Australia. Here are links for Elise Martinson's online blog and her professional website.

Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.
