That's right, "possum", not "opossum". What's the difference? Well, both are marsupials, but an opossum is an exclusively Western Hemisphere animal. They are also commonly called "possums", though that term technically refers to Australian fauna of the suborder Phalangeriformes (such as the one depicted on this coin).

possum, on the other hand, is one of about 70 small to medium-sized arboreal marsupial species native to Australia, New Guinea, and Sulawesi (and introduced to New Zealand and China).

Possums are four-legged diprotodont marsupials with long tails. The smallest possum (indeed, the world's smallest diprotodont marsupial) is the Little Pygmy Possum with an adult head-body length of 3 inches (70 mm) and a weight of less than half an ounce (10 grams)! The largest is the Bear Cuscus, whose weight may exceed 15 pounds (7 kilograms).

Possums are typically nocturnal and at least partially arboreal (tree-living). The various species inhabit most vegetated habitats and several species have adjusted well to urban settings. Diets range from generalist herbivores or omnivores (the Common Brushtail possum) to specialist browsers of eucalyptus (Greater Glider), insectivores (Mountain Pygmy Possum) and nectar-feeders (Honey Possum). Possums were introduced to New Zealand in an effort to establish a fur trade. Unfortunately, they have no natural predators in New Zealand, and have caused much ecological damage and spread disease.

Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.
