Gene Roddenberry’s visionary Star Trek original television series debuted in 1966, and ran for three seasons until 1969. Set in the future, the science fiction program followed the 23rd century adventures of Captain James Tiberius Kirk and the Constitution-class starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, a powerful interstellar spacecraft dispatched by the Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy. Who can forget the opening lines of the title sequence (narrated in voice-over by William Shatner himself!):

Space: The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds,
to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Captain Kirk
Captain Kirk became Starfleet’s youngest captain when he took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 for its five-year mission. Kirk’s mission – and his mandate from Starfleet – is to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before™.

Since its debut fifty years ago, Star Trek has developed into a cultural phenomenon, with spin-off television series and feature films being released on a regular basis. The original series explored a wide variety of significant themes and issues including war and peace, imperialism, economics, racial equality, religion, human rights, feminism, and the role of technology in society and the future.

Outer Color Box! To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before™! This legal tender, pure silver dollar proof coin celebrates the adventures of best buds Captain James Tiberius Kirk (as portrayed by actor William Shatner) and science officer and first officer Mr. Spock (as portrayed by actor Leonard Nimoy) and the voyages of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 of Starfleet Command - set against a backdrop of starships and planets from the Star Trek galaxy, in a stupendous, light up Star Trek: The Original Series communicator sci-fi case!Mr. Spock
Spock, commonly called Mr. Spock (Vulcan: Spock, son of Sarek) is one of the best known fictional characters in the Star Trek media franchise. Spock was most famously portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in the original Star Trek series. Mr. Spock was born in 2230 on the planet Vulcan and initially served as a Starfleet officer for several decades. As a young lieutenant he served as science officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. When Captain James Kirk took command of the vessel in 2265, Spock was promoted to first officer, before eventually being promoted to Captain, serving as commanding officer of two iterations of the vessel.

Spock's mixed human-Vulcan heritage serves as an important plot element in many of the character's appearances. Along with Captain James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, he is one of the three central characters in the original Star Trek series and its films. After retiring from Starfleet, Spock serves as a Federation ambassador, contributing toward the easing of the strained relationship between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. In his later years, he serves as Federation ambassador to the Romulan Star Empire and becomes involved in the ill-fated attempt to save the planet Romulus from a supernova. Leonard Nimoy passed away in February 2015 at the age of 83.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Star Trek!
Star Trek
is an American science fiction entertainment franchise created by Gene Roddenberry and under the ownership of CBS and Paramount. Star Trek: The Original Series and its live action TV spin-off shows, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise as well as the Star Trek film series make up the main canon, while the canonicity of Star Trek: The Animated Series is debated. The expansive library of Star Trek novels and comics whilst still part of the franchise, are generally considered non-canon.

The first series, now referred to as "The Original Series" or TOS, debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons on NBC. It followed the interstellar adventures of James T. Kirk and the crew of the starship Enterprise, an exploration warship of a 23rd-century interstellar "United Federation of Planets". In creating the first "Star Trek", Roddenberry was inspired by Westerns such as Wagon Train, along with the Horatio Hornblower novels and Gulliver's Travels. These adventures continued in the short-lived Star Trek: The Animated Series and six feature films. Four spin-off television series were eventually produced: Star Trek: The Next Generation, followed the crew of a new starship Enterprise set a century after the original series; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, set contemporaneously with The Next Generation; and Star Trek: Enterprise, set before the original series, in the early days of human interstellar travel. Four additional The Next Generation feature films were produced. In 2009, the film franchise underwent a relaunch with a prequel to the original series set in an alternate timeline titled simply Star Trek. This film featured a new cast portraying younger versions of the crew from the original Enterprise. A sequel to this film, Star Trek Into Darkness, premiered on May 16, 2013. A thirteenth theatrical feature, the next sequel to Into Darkness, has been confirmed for release in July 2016, to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary.

Star Trek has been a cult phenomenon for decades. Fans of the franchise are called Trekkies or Trekkers. The franchise spans a wide range of spin-offs including games, figurines, novels, toys, and comics. Star Trek had a themed attraction in Las Vegas which opened in 1998 and closed in September 2008. At least two museum exhibits of props travel the world. The series has its own full-fledged constructed language, Klingon. Several parodies have been made of Star Trek. Its fans, despite the end of Star Trek episodes on TV, have produced several fan productions to fill that void.

Star Trek is noted for its influence on the world outside of science fiction. It has been cited as an inspiration for several technological inventions such as the cell phone. Moreover, the show is noted for its progressive civil rights stances. The original series included one of television's first multiracial casts. Star Trek references can be found throughout popular culture from movies such as the submarine thriller Crimson Tide to the cartoon series South Park.

The Island Nation of Tuvalu
Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbors are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It is comprised of four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also the second-smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 10 square miles Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru.

The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people, who arrived about 3000 years go. The islands came under Great Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Tuvalu became fully independent within The Commonwealth in 1978. with Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state.

Because Tuvalu has few natural resources it has been dependent in recent years upon aid from larger, more developed nations, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Perth Mint of Australia is officially commissioned by the government of Tuvalu to produce legal tender coinage for the island nation.
