Product Description

Who doesn't love Sylvester J. Pussycat? He's a three-time Oscar award winner (no joke!), captured in full color on this exciting, one half troy ounce pure silver proof half dollar!

Welcome to Warner Brothers Looney Tunes! Fourth in the series is everyone's favorite cat, the complex Sylvester J. Pussycat, Jr.! Sylvester shows a lot of pride in himself and never gives up. Despite (or perhaps because of) his pride and persistence, Sylvester is, with rare exceptions, placed squarely on the "loser" side of the Looney Tunes winner/loser hierarchy.

Like many of his cartoon mates from Leon Schlesinger Productions, Sylvester was created by Isadore "Friz" Freleng, who adapted the feline character’s name from the Latin for wild cat, Felis silvestris. Sylvester appeared in 103 cartoons during the golden age of American animation. Three of these in which he starred won Academy Awards (!), making the tuxedo cat the owner of more Oscar statuettes than any other Looney Tunes or Merrie Melodies character! And more than Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence - combined!

Sylvester J. Pussycat Sr., usually simply called Sylvester, is a fictional character, a three-time Academy Award-winning anthropomorphic, 40, 50, or 60-Inch tall Tuxedo cat in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Most of his appearances have him often chasing Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales, or Hippety Hopper. The name "Sylvester" is a play on Felis silvestris, the scientific name for the wild cat species (domestic cats like Sylvester, though, are actually Felis catus).

The character debuted in Friz Freleng's Life With Feathers (1945), but Freleng's 1947 cartoon Tweetie Pie was the first pairing of Tweety Bird with Sylvester, and the Bob Clampett-directed Kitty Kornered (1946) was Sylvester's first pairing with Porky Pig. Sylvester was not named until Chuck Jones gave him the name Sylvester, which was first used in Scaredy Cat.

Sylvester appeared in 103 cartoons in the golden age, appearing in the fourth most films out of all the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies characters, behind only Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Daffy Duck. Three of his cartoons won Academy Awards, the most for any starring Looney Tunes character: they are Tweetie Pie, Speedy Gonzales, and Birds Anonymous. Sylvester was #33 on TV Guide's list of top 50 best cartoon characters, together with Tweety Bird.

The following Looney Tunes Pure Silver Proof coins are planned for 2018:

    2)  Daffy Duck

The Island Nation of Tuvalu

Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbors are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It is comprised of four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also the second-smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 10 square miles Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru.

The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people, who arrived about 3000 years go. The islands came under Great Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Tuvalu became fully independent within The Commonwealth in 1978. with Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state.

Because Tuvalu has few natural resources it has been dependent in recent years upon aid from larger, more developed nations, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Perth Mint of Australia is officially commissioned by the government of Tuvalu to produce legal tender coinage for the island nation.
