Pure 24-karat gold plating highlights this stupendous design! Investment Opportunity! In 1954, the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II became the very first (and to date, only) reigning monarch of the British Royal Family to visit Australia. This was a truly momentous occasion in the history of the new republic, so Australia momentously issued its final pre-decimal commemorative coin, the famed Lion & Kangaroo 1954 Silver Florin.

Elizabeth II was the first reigning monarch of Australia to set foot on Australian soil, coming ashore at Farm Cove, Sydney, on 3 February 1954. She had two years earlier been en route to Australia when her father died while she was on a private visit to Kenya, forcing her to return to the United Kingdom. Once finally in Australia, with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, she undertook a journey through the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, including greeting 70,000 ex-servicemen and women at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and opening the Australian Parliament in Canberra. In all, the Queen traveled 10,000 miles by air, making approximately 33 flights, 2000 miles by road (130 hours in cars in 207 trips), visiting all capitals except Darwin and 70 country towns, many by special "royal trains".

Incredibly, Elizabeth's truly extensive travel allowed some 75 per cent of the Australian population to see the Queen at least once during the tour! Over the decades, during her sixteen journeys the Queen has visited every Australian state and the two mainland territories!

An Outstanding Design!
The outstanding obverse design (created by renowned Australian sculptor and medalist William Leslie Bowles) not only commemorates Queen Elizabeth II's first-ever visit to Australia by a royal monarch, but also graphically represents the historically close ties between the United Kingdom and Australia, one of the leading members of the British Commonwealth. Bowles did this by superimposing a standing lion (symbol of Great Britain) next to a standing kangaroo (symbol of Australia). Both noble creatures face the same direction, symbolizing harmony of purpose, gazing steadfastly together toward the east, the rising sun, and thereby the future.

The 1954 Royal Visit Commemorative Silver Florin can be quite pricey, selling for over $2,000 (US) in extremely high grades! But one need not spend so much to acquire Bowles elegant and evocative design. On the present coin, the lion and kangaroo have been recreated in all their virtuous glory - only better! This time, they are minted in 5 full troy ounces of pure silver, with the noble beasts gilded - highlighted in 24-karat gold plating!
