Pope John Paul II consecrates the eucharistic host during one of many papal or pontifical masses he celebrated all around the world. There was a plot to assassinate John Paul II during this trip, as part of Operation Bojinka, a mass terrorist attack that was planned by Al-Qaeda members Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Sheik Mohammed. A suicide bomber dressed as a priest was to get closer to the Pope's motorcade so that he could detonate himself and murder the Pontiff. Before this could occur, an apartment fire led investigators to Yousef's laptop computer, which had terrorist plans on it, as well as clothes and items that suggested an assassination plot. Yousef was arrested in Pakistan about a month later, but Khalid Sheik Mohammed was not arrested until 2003.

Saint John Paul II's Canonization
The movement for Pope John Paul II's canonization began in 2005, shortly after his death, with the traditional five year waiting period waived. On December 19, 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI. John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed a first miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle attributed to the late pope was approved on July 2, 2013 and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II will be canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII (who inaugurated the Second Vatican Council). Like Pope John XXIII, John Paul II's feast day is not celebrated on the date of his death (as is customary), but on October 22nd, the anniversary of his papal inauguration in 1978.
