The_Australian_Stockman_Cowboy_by_Artist_Painter_S.T._GillStockman: Australian for "Cowboy"
In the early 19th century, the discovery of gold led to the gradual clearing of much of regional Australia for farming. The sheer enormity of these new rural properties (called cattle or sheep stations, the equivalent of an American ranch, a Mexican hacienda, or a South American estancia), and the need to transport livestock long distances required a man on horseback, and so the stockman became an integral part of farming and station life.

Lured by the mesmerizing yet harsh Australian outback, these early stockmen were instrumental in opening up the untamed wilderness of inland Australia as they drove their livestock through the untouched bush and scrublands. The Australian stockman was a courageous and highly skilled rider, at one with both his horse and the outback. The equivalent in North America is the cowboy, and in South America the gaucho.

Please note, the mint images of this beautiful proof coin do not do it justice. The fields are deeply mirrored, the relief devices are white-frosted cameo, while the rich, deep colors are incredible!

Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.

Australia 2014 Land Down Under #3 Stockman SilverObverse
An Australian stockman or cowboy on horseback herds sheep at sunset on a station or ranch, set inside the continent of Australia. The legends THE LAND DOWN UNDER and AUSTRALIAN STOCKMAN define the theme. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is judiciously placed south of the continent, to the west of Tasmania. The legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.

Reverse
The reverse features Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date and the denomination also appear.
