Product Description

This rectangular, legal tender pure silver dollar celebrates the centennialof World War I (known as the "War to End All Wars") with an original, full color poster depicting the YMCA's "Send Them All Snapshots From Home" League of Australia, from the home front in the First World War.

The Perth Mint and Talisman Coins proud to offer the third in the popular and historically significant program, Australian Posters of World War I. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. As the dominoes fell one by one and alliances were invoked, the Guns of August roared to life, millions of men on both sides of the conflict were called up. Four and a half years later, millions of men lay dead, world history had been irrevocably changed, and the seeds of the even more devastating Second World War had been sown. These low mintage, rectangular-shapedpure silver dollars are category-busters which appeal to collectors of history, art, militaria, media, and World War I memorabilia. Get this moving and fitting tribute to the heroism and sacrifices of the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the "War to End All Wars" before it sells out! Because no more than 5,000 of these pure silver dollar coins will be struck and issued by the Perth Mint, we believe that this coin will disappear quickly!

Send Them All Snapshots From Home WWI poster"Send Them All Snapshots From Home" Poster
In 1916 the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) established the Snapshots from Home League of Australia, which aimed to raise the morale of those Australians serving in the First World War by supplying them with photographs of their loved ones at home.

These precious photos were then sent free of charge via the YMCA to troops in hospitals and on the front lines in Europe and the Middle East.

The "Send them all snapshots from home" poster was among several Australian copies of a series of British posters commissioned in 1915 by the YMCA. Designed by the artist Fred Pegram, this poster' design is extremely handsome, depicting a group of soldiers in a French village smiling and passing around photographs received from home. It was one of the most effective First World War poster campaigns in Australia.

"The War to End All Wars" & the Technology of Death
The flagship of the British Grand Fleet, the dreadnought HMS Iron Duke, as she appeared at the Battle of Jutland. In President Woodrow Wilson's famous words, the First World War was "the war to end all wars," or such was the hope of a ravaged Europe in 1918. Never before in human history had science and technology been harnessed to such an extent in the service of Death. Never before had war been waged simultaneously in the skies, on the earth, and below the waves. Never before had the world seen the ruinous destruction wrought by airplanes, tanks and submarines. Never before had it witnessed the desolation of trench warfare - the deafening artillery fire, sweeping machine guns mowing down rows of soldiers, and lethal poison gases.

Over 65 million soldiers from around the world served their countries in battle. Historians estimate that up to 10 million lost their lives, while 20 million others were wounded. Today, as the world pays tribute to the last surviving veterans of this terrible conflict, these significant coins will forever honor the legacy of all who fought for freedom.
