The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Musikverein.jpgThe Vienna Philharmonic (die Wiener Philharmoniker) was founded in 1842. It was recently named as the best orchestra in all of Europe, and is widely considered one of the finest in the world. Their distinctive sound can be attributed to the use of instruments and playing styles that are fundamentally different than those used by other major orchestras.

The Vienna Philharmonic's repertoire is among the largest of any orchestra, though they are perhaps best known for their renditions of Strauss pieces, the composing family with whom the orchestra is most closely associated in the public's mind. Tickets are notoriously hard to come by - there is a thirteen year waiting list for weekend season tickets (but only a six year wait for weeknight subscriptions)!

Musikverein_Goldener_Saal.jpg
The Musikverein
The home of the Vienna Philharmonic is the Musikverein. This magnificent concert hall opened in Vienna, Austria in 1870, and is famous the world over for its acoustics. It is considered to be one of the three finest symphony halls in the world, along with Boston's Symphony Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw.

The largest concert hall in the Musikverein is the Grosser Musikvereinsaal, known more simply as the Golden Hall (or Goldener Saal). This opulent venue measures 156 feet long, 62 feet wide, and 58 feet high. It has 1,744 seats and and additional standing room capacity for 300 more. Every year on January 1st, the Vienna New Year's Say Concert is held here. The massive organ at the front of the Golden Hall, one of the signatures of the Vienna Philharmonic, was installed by the Austrian firm of Rieger in 1907.
